Born in February 1, 1902, Langston Hughes was part of the Great Depression and the Harlem Renaissance. When he was a child, his parents were divorced and was raised by his grandparents until he was 13. He then moved to Lincoln to live with his mother. This is where he started to write poetry. He tried to write about serious topics with wit and humor and his poems echoed with the rhythms of blues and jazz. He was one the first African Americas writers to influence people worldwide and win worldwide favor. During the Great Depression, many people were extremely desperate for money.
