“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, is located at Musees Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels, Belgium. Pieter Bruegel the Elder is a South-Netherlandish painter, he created this painting between the years 1555 and 1558. The oil painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is a 29 x 44 ⅛” painting that is mounted on wood. This painting is connected to the poem “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” written by William Carlos William, this poem tells the story of Icarus, the son of Daedalus. Daedalus and his son, Icarus, were imprisoned on the island of Crete by King Minos. People are occupied with day to day activities that need to be done in order to survive that they do not pay attention to the tragedies that are happening around us until the tragedy is happening to oneself. In the painting, the plowman, the fisherman, the shepherd and even the animals continue to do their day to day activities, without a care about what is happening around them, they do not notice Icarus falling and do not do anything to help him. This is much like today's society, people are constantly experiencing tragic events in their lives and are in need of help, but do not receive any help. For example, a family just received the terrible news of a close relative passing away, people outside of the family unknown of the sadness that is consuming this family, continue on with their lives because there is simply no time to grieve the passing of every human being in this world. Pieter Bruegel’s painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” is one of the greatest masterpieces created. The idea that time continues to pass endlessly is very evident, though every figure or shape that was drawn into this image. Overall, Bruegel succeeded in displaying the story of Icarus through illusions and the elements of art. Through every element found in this painting, Bruegel was able to create a great work of art that represents the story of Icarus but also the story of time and
