The quote states “Everyone in this country has the opportunity to succeed”. My position on this quote is everyone truly does have the opportunity to succeed. The word I would like to focus on is opportunity. Opportunity is defined as a good chance for advancement or progress (Merriam Webster). I believe everyone has a good chance of achieving their own definition of success in this country. Ultimately, America is known as the land of opportunity. People risk their lives to come to this country and achieve the American dream. Everybody knows of someone who achieved success that came from absolutely nothing. Tyler became homeless and made his car his home. Nonetheless, Tyler continued to write plays and never lost faith in himself. Today, Tyler Perry is worth 600 million dollars. Actress, producer, former talk show host, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey also had an unfortunate childhood. Oprah grew up in extreme poverty, so extreme that she sometimes wore potato sacks as clothing. At the age of nine Oprah was raped by an older male cousin. Oprah’s experience with sexual assault did not stop there. Oprah was raped by other male cousins, uncles and friends of her mother. As an adult, Oprah landed her first gig as a local news anchor in Baltimore. Oprah experienced sexual harassment at her job also. Oprah was fired from this job only 7 months after landing it. Today she is worth 3.1 billion dollars and arguably one of the most famous women on the planet. Coming from the circumstances that they did, it obvious Oprah and Tyler did not become successful completely on their own.
