The U.S. healthcare system as a whole is a major problem, however if I had to choose one specific problem it would be limited access to care. Have you ever sat down with an elderly woman or gentleman who reminisced about how back in the day, the doctor would come to them? I have, on multiple occasions and it’s sad that these same people do not have the access to care that they need. After reading through the text I realized many different reasons for this lack of access to care that I hadn’t even thought of, such as childcare needs, refusal of certain doctors accepting certain health insurances, and long office waits (Stanhope p.132). It appears that the poorest people in our country are the ones suffering the most. It’s hard to decipher if it is the lack of medical care that keeps these people at a level of poverty, or the poverty is keeping them from seeing the doctors they need. …show more content…

If prevention is a primary factor, why are we not helping these people? Why are we making our poor, poorer? To address this issue, there needs to be more community nursing. Insurance companies want people out of the hospital quicker, out of skilled nursing facilities quicker and back home, for the sole purpose of it is cheaper. However, when these people are in their homes, there needs to be services that can be put in place for longer periods of time to see that they remain healthy and stay in their homes.
