In LIBS 6144, I implemented an inquiry lesson with a small group of fourth graders. For this lesson students were to pose their own questions about a topic. Students were to work through the stages of inquiry facilitated by the teacher based on the students’ questions. This artifact included a lesson plan, a student product, and facilitation of student learning incorporating 21st Century skills.

In creating this artifact, I collaborated with a teacher and created an inquiry lesson based on a unit of study. I first created a backwards plan that included a project that resulted from student posed questions. The media coordinator serves as a facilitator of learning that allows student to access resources to be responsible for their own learning.

If I were to recreate the course artifact, I would allow students more time to take control of their own learning. I would allow students to seek answers to their own individual questions. I feel the students would then be motivated to conduct their own investigations. I would also provide students more instruction on conducting a search and accessing materials and resources. If students are not proficient in this area, it can become an obstacle in the inquiry process.

What I learned from the artifact and course experience that I will use in my professional work is methods to help enhance student learning. I have learned by possessing certain dispositions, a culture can be built that increases student achievement. By allowing students to control their learning through inquiry learning, deeper meaningful learning can be achieved. I have learned strategies to create a 21st Century learning environment where students are encouraged to facilitate their own learning by collaborating with others beyond the school walls and participating in a learning community. It is important to provide resources and opportunities that meet the learning needs of all students so that they are better able to solve
