Does Revenge Bring True Satisfaction? Many humans take revenge on one another by committing violent acts of revenge, it is used to satisfy one’s feelings, and by harming others, humans feel better about themselves, since they feel they are the ones with power. This idea is evident in the Shakespearean play King Lear, Particularly through the example of Edmund. Edmund seeks revenge against his father Gloucester, who will allow Edmund to hold no lands or titles since he was born a bastard. Yet Edmund defies his father and commits terrible actions that harm his father and half-brother, so that he may hold the power. As they continue to strive to satisfy their feelings, thoughts of peace and communion are continually shut out and soon become impossible to achieve. This is can be seen when Edmund recites his first soliloquy of the play, making his true actions known to the audience, he says: “Legitimate Edgar, I must have your land: / Our Father’s love is to the bastard Edmund” (1.2.1617). Edmund has continually been thinking about achieving power and taking revenge on his father that he is ignorant to the thoughts of peace, He does not think of Edgar as his brother, but rather as an obstacle in the way of his goal. People will start to want to repent for their negative actions that have taken place. Humans believe that that once revenge has taken place, they will be satisfied with their feelings and start to feel better about themselves, yet this is rarely ever the case. This is seen when Edmund is dying and starts to feel shame about his past actions, he states: “I pant for life; some good I mean to do / Despite of mine own nature” (5.3.242-43). He then tells Albany where King Lear and Cordelia are and how there is a plan for them to be hanged. Edmunds remorse is plain to see, which shows how the human mind feels guilty for taking revenge. Edmund did not feel the satisfaction that he originally thought he would achieve, the revenge against father did not make him happier.
