How often do you see a group of friends taking a selfie at amusement parks, concerts or anywhere in public? This happens on a daily basis nowadays. According to Courtney Seiter, nearly 300 million Instagram photos had been tagged with the selfie label in 2015(The Psychology of Selfies: Why We Love Taking and Viewing Photos of Faces). In other words, this new selfie era has become so integrated in our culture that selfies are a normal action. The main appeal to selfies is the ability to exert a greater level of control on how others view us on social media. Now with technology advancement, our society lacks power to what is perceived. Kim Kardashian has become relevant and in everyone’s eyes and ears recently on social media and like every celebrity, her celebrity status started somewhere. The Kardashian Family first appeared in the media when Kim’s Father, Robert Kardashian, defended O.J. Simpson’s murder case back in 1994. Later, Kim began to be seen on the media through her friendship with Paris Hilton. She then gained major attention when her sex tape with a famous celebrity, William Ray Norwood Jr, known as Ray J, released in 2007. According to Gene Marks, a business management columnist, this event ultimately jumpstarted Kim’s celebrity career and brought attention back to the Kardashians (5 Reasons Why You’re Wrong About Kim Kardashian). In other words, this scandal was stirring enough to make a lasting impression that gave Kim a celebrity platform. Kim posted a photo on Twitter displaying herself fully nude til the photo is cut at her thigh. In the photo, her body is positioned to cover her groin and breasts. One hand is reached across her body, covering her breasts, while the other lies to cover groin area. Kim is also looking to her upper left, not making eye contact with the camera. The background of the photo is plain black. This blends in with her hair since it is black as well. Her hair is styled to appear as a messy, beach wave look with her make-up done as well. The tonality of the photo appears as a dark sepia coloring. It is almost a black and white photo expect there is a slight tint of brown from her skin tone. The overall tone of the photo makes it softer for the audience to view. There is not a deep contrast between Kim and the background, but enough for her to appear glowing.
