Kilauea is a shield volcano. In Hawaii it is the youngest and the most active volcano in Hawaii. It’s the most active volcano out of the five volcanoes put together in Hawaii. When Kilauea erupts, and when lava is everywhere it looks like a river of lava. Kilauea elevation is 4,019. Kilauea is located in the southern part of Hawaii. Kilauea is sitting on the southeast flank of the massive Mauna Loa shield volcano. Kilauea is the home of Pele, the hawaiian volcano goddess. The hawaiian name Kilauea means “spewing” or “much spreading”. For many years, Kilauea was thought to be mere satellite of it’s giant neighborhood, not a separate volcano. Kamiak Butte is one of the few areas near Pullman that reflect the many geologic terms learned in class. This area is an example of an area that is extinct to the surrounding landforms. This butte is located in Whitman County, in between the cities of Colfax and Pullman, Washington. With an elevation of 3, 641 feet above sea level, Kamiak Butte has one of the highest elevations in all of Whitman County (1). The county park covers about 298 acres, and consists mainly of woodlands. Once one has climbed to the top of the butte, the sights become endless and breathe taking. To the north is Steptoe Butte, and southeast is Paradise Ridge and Moscow Mountain. Surrounding the top is endless views of loess dunes, and Blue Mountains that can be seen far into, to the southeast. The breath taking views, and short ten-minute drive from the Washington State University campus, make for Kamiak Butte being one of the most visited hikes in Whitman county (3). The hike offers the option for both those wanting to take a leisurely walk through nature, or a more rigorous adventure. The first hiking trail, that only consists of one mile, opens into a 3.5-mile trail that leads to the ridge of Kamiak Butte.
The Big Island is a vital part of Hawaiian history and culture. In fact, people still believe that there is a Hawaiian god that still resides there and is among the living. Supposedly, there is a volcano goddess names Pele who lives in the Kilauea Volcano. Since 1983, she has provoked eruptions at the Kilauea Volcano.

People have written stories of their disastrous eruptions, and painted their marvelous shapes on canvas. Mauna Loa is Earth’s largest volcano and most massive mountain as it takes up nearly half of the flourishing landscape of the island of Hawai’i. This island is actually made up of five volcanoes, Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea, all in such close proximity that they fused together to form one whole island. Mauna Loa is located in the south central area of Hawai’i, in the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and its coordinates are 19°5' N, 155°6' W. It is 13,680 ft above sea level, but if one measures from its true base on the ocean floor, it is estimated to be 30,080 feet tall. Its name is quite fitting as it means “Tall Mountain”.
American Hawaii Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, it’s nice year-round weather, and its culture. Native Hawaiians have adapted to our American lifestyle and much of their old traditions and beliefs are lost in history books. America dominated over the Hawaiians just as they did with the Native Americans. The Hawaiians didn’t even stand a chance against big brother. They probably feel the same way towards America just as a child does with stubborn parents. Now I will tell you about the history of Hawaii so you will see how the United States came to annex Hawaii. Hawaii was first inhabited by the Polynesians. They came in canoes from other islands around the pacific. They called the new found island "Hawaii", which means "home" in Polynesian language. Hawaii was their home until the white man came in and took advantage of these simple, happy aborigines. The corruption of this unique and fragile culture first started when Captain James Cook ran into the islands on January 18, 1778. After Cook’s discovery, many other foreigners (mostly American) visited the islands. They brought clothes, livestock, orange trees, horses weapons and souvigners. Foreigners also brought with them a handful of deadly diseases such as smallpox, measles, syphilis, tuberculosis, and whooping cough. During the time period of Cook’s arrival in 1778 to 1820, the population of Hawaii dropped from 300,000 to 135,000 due to the diseases! Another problem was the introduction of alcohol. Like the native americans, Hawaiians were not immune to alcohol. Hawaiian’s were very sensitive to alcoholism. Hawaiians religion was a very complex one with many gods. According to the Overthrow Part III worksheet, the American flag replaced the Hawaiian flag to signify that Hawaii was officially annexed to the U.S.. The overthrow began with many events such as the Bayonet Constitution and the annexation of Hawaii to the United States. This was all lead by foreigner groups such as the Hawaiian League and Committee of Safety, but some Hawaiians and even some foreigners did not want this to follow through. As a matter of fact some Hawaiians and some foreigners, such as Hui Aloha Aina and a group of Robert Wilcox and his men tried multiple attempts to cease the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, but was not successful. Although the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom reduced the Hawaiians rights and ended the Hawaiian Monarchy, it was also beneficial to Hawaii because it brought protection to Hawaii with the United States Army.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth. The chance to see this creation and destruction makes this park one of the most visited National Parks in the United States.
Pele (also called Ka wahine `ai honua, the woman who devours the land) is the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. She is very popular in Hawaiian mythology and is believed to live in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, a fire pit at the summit of Kīlauea (an active volcano). There are a few variations of how Pele actually came to the Hawaiia islands. One was through expulsion, and the other by canoe. In the canoe/flood version, Pele received a canoe from her oldest brother, Kamohoali'i, the king of sharks and travelled far away with her brothers and came across Hawaii. Upon arrival, she is attacked by her older sister, Na-maka-o-Kaha’i. Pele survived, recovered, and fled to Oahu. There, she dug a numerous amount of “fire pits,” which include the DIamond Head crater in Honolulu. After, she travelled farther southeast to Maui, and created the Haleakala volcano. The Senkaku Islands became the Sino-Japanese boundary between the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Qing empire. In 1885, the Japanese Governor of Okinawa, Nishimura Sutezo, asked the Meiji government to take control of the islands. However, Inoue Kaoru, the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, commented that the islands had been given Chinese names already. The Mauna Loa volcano is located in Hawaii and means "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian. It is a giant, basaltic shield volcano. It is one of the largest volcanoes and mountains in the world and has been called the "monarch of mountains". It has an estimated volume of 9,600 cubic miles and takes up half the land of Hawaii. It extends about 120 km starting from the southern tip of the island to the northern region. It is 97 km (60 miles) long, 48 km (30 miles) wide, and is 8,742 km (28,680 miles) high from the base on the sea floor to the top. The slopes are steeper than 12 degrees and about 4 degrees at the top of the volcano. Mauna Loa formed about half a million years ago and in the middle stages of forming into a shield volcano where lava flows to form a sloped and broad flat domed volcanic cone. Along with Mauna Kea, the Mauna Loa volcano is responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Mauna Loa has erupted thirty-three times since 1843 and is known as one of the most active volcanoes in the world today. The last eruption was 1984 and lava flowed within 4 miles of the city of Hilo. This shows that it is dangerous to live anywhere near Mauna Loa and that it poses as a threat to anyone living near it because it has a very high possibility of erupting within a very short span of time. Vesuvius rises to a height of 1277 m (4190 ft). Vesuvio (Vesuvius) is probably the most famous volcano on earth, and is one of the most dangerous.
