“Often fear of one evil leads us into a worse”(Despreaux). Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux is saying that fear consumes oneself and often times results in a worse fate. William Golding shares a similar viewpoint in his novel Lord of the Flies. A group of boys devastatingly land on a deserted island. Ralph and his friend Piggy form a group. Slowly, they become increasingly fearful. Then a boy named Jack rebels and forms his own tribe with a few boys such as Roger and Bill. Many things such as their environment, personalities and their own minds contribute to their change. Eventually, many of the boys revert to their inherently evil nature and become savage and only two boys remain civilized. The boys deal with many trials, including each other, and true colors show. In the end they are being rescued, but too much is lost. Their innocence is forever lost along with the lives Simon, a peaceful boy, and an intelligent boy, Piggy. Throughout the novel, Golding uses symbolism and characterization to show that savagery and evil are a direct effect of fear.

During the first two years of high school, I volunteered for various clubs to discover my interests. At the time, clubs seemed similar to hobbies that American teenagers enjoy to pursue rather than develop practical skills. Reaching my second year, I joined the Kaiser Junior volunteering program after unexpectedly running into volunteers during a visit at Kaiser, and it left a warming impression that inspired me to sign up for the program. Before joining the Lucky Ladies Social Club I did not have a social life, my life consisted of going to work, school and church. Being a single mother of a thirteen year old daughter, I decided I needed to venture out and make some time for myself and that’s when I discovered the Lucky Ladies Social Club. However, before joining I decided to research other clubs in my surrounding area for example the Ladies Choice Social Club and the Lady Street Soldiers Social Club. These clubs offered the same benefits of sisterhood and also went on a lot of out of town trips but they were not organized and did not focus on volunteer work. The Lucky Ladies provided me with a chance to give back to my community; they were diverse, and unified. In September 2007, I decided to join the Lucky Ladies Social Club which is a non profit organization.
Throughout my years attending Woodside, I joined the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Being involved with these two clubs so far has provided me with the astonishing lessons that I will need in life to have a successful future for myself. Also, I am planning to go very far in life after high school due to these two important clubs because of the many ways they have helped me as an individual. Not only did I participate in clubs but I have also volunteered at Greenwood Elementary School. Being a volunteer at this school involved me working with kindergarteners and 1st graders. My duties included reading to the children, helping with any assigned classwork or homework, making sure they are safe, and assisting the teachers with anything they needed help with. This year I have served 74 hours for Learner Leadership Council, 27 hours for National Charity League and 17 hours for New Tech High at Coppell. One of my favorite places to volunteer is at Cornerstone Closet where homeless adults come to get needed items and take showers. We get to help them find clothes, and necessities and spend time talking with them. Another organization that I spend a great deal of time serving in the summertime is Metrocrest. We put together the food backpacks for families through the Backpack Summer Hunger Project. These organizations reach out to other organizations and charities and assist with acts of service. Even on campus I have been able to serve others. Being a NTH@C Tour Ambassador has been an important way for me to give back to my school. I enjoy showing others our learning environment and the importance of what happens each day. By attending clubs on campus is also another way that I feel is a pertinent way to serve alongside others and celebrate their passions. Since second semester of sophomore year, I have the privilege of participating in my schools National Honor Society. Every month we have a meeting and, by the end of the year we are expected to have thirty hours of community service accomplished. Along with NHS, I attended a couple School Leadership meetings, but reluctantly had to stopped due to my schedule. Both junior and senior year i have participated in the club Business Professionals of America were I held parliamentarian junior year and secretary senior year.

Berkeley Skatepark is where I grew up and where I developed many of my skateboarding skills. During the experiences that I’ve had while doing this community outreach I’ve observed that at first you can tell that these young men weren’t very excited maybe because they’re mindsets are that the most important people in their lives abandoned them soon we will too. So that it was difficult for the young men to open up so we started of doing activates such as playing sports and watching movies to get closer to the young men. After a while I started to see a sense of acceptance by some of the young boys, we still kept our composer by not pushing to strong in order for these young men to see that we are here for good not to make them feel like a charity case. As soon after the young men began to show interest in what we were trying to do and our purpose of what we were doing, we explained that we wanted to be mentors to them more like “big brothers” we all are not far from age but still time is the best teacher so we use our experiences to help. Im thoroughly glad I chose Penn State to be my college, for many reasons of course, but one of them being the endless opportunities. Ranging from athletic events, the lively town, and various music related events, something is almost always going on. I was trying to decide what i’d like to do this assignment for, and something that crossed my mind was a way to help the community and give back since i’ve been given so much. So in return I did some googling and spoke with friends, and soon was informed that a blood drive was happening on a day that was convenient for me. I could not think of a better way to easily help others and feel great about myself at the same time. Chuck Palahniuk’s “Fight Club” deals with a man frustrated on many different levels; from his childhood to present day life. Fight Clubs' setting contributes to what makes Fight Club such a powerful story. The narrator who is never named, starts off in chapter six with what could be described as an office hell; complete with empty smiles and feeble minded speak of which color icon they will use for office reports. The beginning of chapter six reminds the reader of mindless zombie office speak and a lack of life, that is all too common in many peoples lives. The reader will most likely identify with what is written in a manner easily transferable to anyones life. I believe most people, when reading would characterize the office environment as the light side and the hours during fight club at the bottom of the bar the dark side. I would argue the complete opposite. For the narrator, all the hate, the disgust, the total contempt for humanity is created in that office environment. All the feelings of life, and meaning, and what I would characterize as happiness is all felt during the time fight club is in effect in the bottom of that bar.
I have been involved in the American Cancer Society for five years. My team, Team Hoot has raised funds for cancer as well as participating in Relay for Life each year. This year, I will be on the board committee at Relay; giving back to the survivors. This organization is one that I always promote and give back to. Also being involved in Relay for Life this year, National Honors Society is a club that helps the community. Being on the executive board, I correlate new service projects as well as corresponding with the Lee County National Honor Society chapter. Also, I am forming a new club at North Fort Myers High, Red Cross Club. Being president, Red Cross helps donates funds back to the American Red Cross.
