Dancing with the Stars kicked off its 16th season on March 18th with a new all star cast of celebrity partners and just like the last 15 seasons there can only be one winner. Week by week partner teams were dismissed from the competition. The fresh face of a country singer, Kellie Pickler, and her professional partner, Derek Hough, preformed their way into the semi-finales with the approach to the quality of a dance and not quantity. All in a chance to entitle themselves with the coveted mirror ball trophy. Taped live in Beverly Blvd, Hollywood, CA, week 10’s performance show, before the final winner was announced, aired on May 20, 2013. The finale challenge was the judges choice of dance for each of the remaining contestants. Among those remanning teams, the duo of Kellie and Derek stunned in their judges choice of the quickstep to the track “Peppy and George”- Ludovic Bource. This performance was successful from the way the partners embodied the theme, to the costumes and lighting, and how the overall piece was performed best to the competitions guidelines for a quickstep. The main theme, consisting of the roaring 20’s, was consistently portrayed through out the dance.
Kellie and Derek’s portrayal of a high energy, fast paced, roaring 20’s number was complete with a black and white intro and a live jazz band suppling the music. The physically and technically challenging quickstep is defined as “a lively step or combination of steps in ballroom dancing” (quickstep). Judge Len Goodmen gave the duo some advice before preforming live on how to properly execute a quickstep, “you’re are a couple of magnets and nothing is going to pull you apart” (Dancingwts09). ...ep performance. Shining as the main focus, the simplistic technical aspects enhanced the mood and the embodiment of the characters they portrayed. Technically and physically the preciseness and the fast paced movements behind every count sold the performance. They “could have not put in more content if you tried” (Dancingwts09) judge Bruno Tonioli. Proving in the end the bond that was formed and the quality not quantity of the dance, and the support from the nation could Kellie and Derek entitle themselves as season 16 Dancing with the Stars Champions. Winning the coveted mirror ball trophy.

So You Think You Can Dance has brought many of the most controversial subjects and statements to the forefront, through dance, which would have never been addressed on such a public platform otherwise. The show has shed light on many of the taboo subjects in our culture, such as biracial dating, mental illness, and drug addiction. For twelve seasons, each and every season becomes more progressive as America does. It is a televised dance competition series, and many of its stunning performances, including “Gravity” from season 5, can be found on YouTube. This piece about addiction hits the spotlight in the summer of 2009, and it receives all around rave reviews from the judges. and in front of the whole school during spirit week and international week, without a bit of apprehension. Gaining this confidence was and is the key to victories in dance competitions. Confidence and my familiarity with a variety of dance forms such as hip-hop, jazz, and several Indian classical dances can be credited to my winning first place in a memorable competition, where, for the first time, my two friends and I choreographed the dance piece that we performed. This experience also helped as the same friends and I had 2 weeks to choreograph, perfect, and perform alongside a famous Indian singer as he sang live. These values specifically pushed me advance further into the art form, and were also extremely useful outside of the dance

I play black classical music.” This quote perfectly embodies how the Cakewalk dance was treated during its dawning in the late 19th century. The dance was both praised and criticized by its observers. The Cakewalk started out as a way for African-American slaves to mock their masters and live in autonomy. But, quickly enough, the Cakewalk gained popularity and began to evolve into formal dance competitions where the winning couple would be awarded a large and ornate cake. Through the study of life and literature, one can tell that racism continues to be truly pervasive. In Nikky Finney’s “Dancing with Strom”, the reader can witness the tension that exists between the races in society today. Although the poem shows how as times progress, mentalites seem to change as well, it is evident that many African Americans, such as Nikky Finney, still live in fear of the racism that hides and lurks in the corners.
Allison Bonetti, a dancer in the performance, is quoted, remarking, “I feel dizzy every time we complete the Waltz section, but I don’t feel dirty or scandalous, as I would after, say I maybe danced in a club. I think I speak for many of us when I say that the Waltz feels like a dance my grandmother would do.” In fact, the performance is misleading seeing as it is paired with very formal and controlled dances such as the Pavane and the minuet. In fact, modern historians such as Mark Knowles have compared the Waltz to social hip hop dances of today such as “krumping and grinding” since through the ages social dances have been “manifestations of society’s beliefs, values, attitudes, confusions, and concerns.” If the performance was to correctly convey this notion, it would have beneficial to place the nineteenth century Waltz in the second half of the performance, along with dances like the Quan and the Whip. The documentary follows the journey of fifth grade students as they learn how to ballroom dance, and enter a citywide competition. The children in the documentary express their perspectives on ballroom dancing, goals and inspirations, and what it is like to grow up in their neighborhoods. The documentary highlights the benefits of exposing urban youth to ballroom dancing (Agrelo, 2005).

Breakdancing The history of choreography is also very important: Any choreography that seems new, fresh and different is usually a variation of something that has been done before. As long as men and women have lived upon this earth, they have danced. The art of movement is among the oldest of the arts. So for eight months I’ve been learning the skills of hip hop and breakdancing by going to a hip hop club every week where I learned the basic skills of breaking like how to top-rock and six-step.
The concept of the game is simple. Directional arrows scroll up the screen, which represent dance steps. The player must step down on the corresponding arrow when it reaches on top of the screen. In writing it sounds simple, but this game will test a player's eye-hand.. err.. eye-foot coordination. All of the songs have cleverly designed dance patterns that include jumping, freeze arrows and off-beat steps. Not only do the songs have varied dance patterns but there are three difficulty settings available to the player based on how good the player is including: light, standard, and extreme. It takes time to get better at, but over all it's a fun experience, after getting past the initial embarrassment.
“Call and response” is also utilized, which is when the DJ and the dancers will communicate in order to maintain a certain hip hop flow, and to encourage audience enthusiasm. The moves, along with the music works together to emphasize the rapid rhythm breaks. The dancers perform moves that involve flips, upside down movement, and spinning, along with “drops” that were smooth transitions to “front swipes, back swipes, dips, and corkscrews”.” One dancer even performs a “chair freeze” which was originally one of the most popular break dancing moves, and is when the arms and upper body support the body while the legs and lower half of the body are free flowing (Forman & Neal, 2012, pg. 58). These moves require much momentum and balance, which according to popular b-boy Ken Swift, is an essential aspect to this hip hop movement (Forman & Neal, 2012, pg. 59). In both films, b-boying or breakdancing is a way to resolve some type of conflict or competition due to being able to “attack without mercy yet still see their opponents as distinct and valuable human beings” and avoid any unnecessary violence that already occurs in drastic rates within inner city neighborhoods (Chang, 2006, pg.
The intricate and delicate choreography of Slip was daunting, yet relatable. Phillip Chbeeb and Renee Kester created the concept and the choreography and performed the dance beautifully. Everything about the setting, the music of choice and the moves blended ever so perfectly. From the beginning when they made contact with each other through their hands to the very end when he caressed her face very lightly and their eyes met, each part of the choreography was felt through the viewer.
