"Self-confidence is the most important characteristic of successful people.- Katie Couric. Katie Couric is one of America's most important and loved journalist. As a media person in her lifetime, she has acheived and accomplished so much. Her character has played a vast role in this. Being a self-confident individual, an optimist, and a person not afraid of the criticism from people in this mundane world, is that which has lead and is leading her on her path of success. Katie Couric, born Katherine Anne Couric, was born January 7, 1957 in Arlington County, Virginia. From that union two children were born, Elinor Monahan and Caroline Monahan. John and Katie were married for ten years until in 1998, John died of colon cancer at the age 42. From there on Couric became a relentless supporter of cancer research and cancer centers. In 2010, Couric recieved an honorary doctor of science degree for her support of raising awareness of colorectal cancer. In 2011, she was awarded yet another award, the Doctor of Human Letters, for her support of cancer awarness. She has supported breast cancer, colon cancer, and many more. She is also a supporter of countless other causes like: Adoption, Fostering, Orphans, Creative Arts, Disaster Relief, Education, Grief Support, Health, Homelessness, Human Rights, Hunger, Poverty, as well as many others. Also in 1989, Couric worked for NBC News as a Deputy Pentagon Correspondent. Couric joined Today, working as a the national political correspondent, which lead her to the position of substitute co-host. She became the permanent host in 1991, when previous host, Deborah Norville, did not return to the show. Couric continued to work for Today and NBC News for the following fifiteen years.
