During his stay in Birmingham, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was put in jail. He then receives a letter from the clergymen of Birmingham to stop protesting and go home. In his response letter “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addresses why he opposes some laws and favors others. Dr. King then explains the differences between just and unjust laws. Just and unjust laws are contrasting, as just laws are followed by everyone no matter their unique characteristics, while unjust laws are forced to be followed by the minority because of their characteristics; Dr. King's assertions are to be agreed with.
For laws to be just, they must treat everyone equally and be followed by everyone. A just law is accepting of everyone no matter their heterogeneity. “Any law that uplifts human personality is just” (16). Human personality are the characteristics that make a person unique. Moreover, accepting and acknowledging these characteristics makes a law just. If a law treats all as equals, it is just. “...a just law is a code that a majority compels a minority to follow and that is willing to follow itself” (17). Unjust laws only compel the minority to follow, not the majority. However, just laws are followed by everyone. A law that treats everyone as equals and is acquiesced by everyone is just.
