Success is something that is not given or something you are born with it is something that is attained through morals and hard work. The idea of success comes in many of different forms. John Wooden is one of the most renowned basketball coaches. He has a variety of different accolades to his name. He was the head coach at UCLA for over 20 years were he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period. He also was named national coach of the year six times. When you think of someone being an athlete you usually think of someone who is well trained and someone who can excel is their respective sport. Athletes are constantly changing many of them want to become successful and improve. Constant performance improvement is an obsession (Schroth 141). Many of people tend to look up to athletes as models for their lives. For this reason athletes should be much more than someone who is strong or fast. He or she should be someone who can lead by example and requires great morals and character. While at UCLA John Wooden gave his pyramid of success to all of his players as a guide to help them attain personal greatness as well becoming great leaders. Many of these athletes have had very successful careers in basketball and many other career paths. Many of John Wooden’s old players still use his pyramids ideas and apply them to their everyday lives. For example Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar point to the pyramid as a key to their success on and off the court.
