Little Caesar Essay

In the movie Little Caesar the plot is based on the rise and fall of crime lord Rico Bandello (played by Edward Robinson), and his friend Joe who eventually wants to leave the business in crime.
The movie starts with a slow shot of a gas station. A car drives up, and the cashier working there is shoved in the store as three gunshots ring out. It then goes to a shot of Rico and Joe in a diner talking about a successful gangster named Pete Montana. They decide to move to the city. There, Rico wants to be like Pete, and Joe wants find a girl he loves and be a dancer after his time with the gang. Rico doesn’t like this idea of Joe’s and dismisses it saying tit wasn’t important.
Rico gets started immediately and joins Sam Vettori’s gang and Joe gets a job as a dancer at a place called the Bronze Peacock. There Joe and his dance partner fall in love and passionately hug. However she finds his gun and asks him to leave his criminal life behind, he tells her that he wouldn’t be able to get away with it. The next scene is placed at the gangster Arnie Lorch’s gambling house where Sam Vettori and Rico are meeting Pete Montana. The gangsters discuss business and say that the next hit has to have no killing. Montana tells Rico this and tells him to take it easy with his gun.
As the gang plans the robbery of the Bronze Peacock, Rico gets gets very ambitious. When Joe is late and finds out that the Bronze Peacock is going to be robbed he begs Rico to let him out. This pisses off Rico and he replies to Joe saying that he will be in on the robbery and will like it. When the robbery takes place Joe does his job and it is successful. As they leave rico disobeys what Pete told him and shoots the crime commissioner. With Joe ...

...nd men after them and they kill Rico’s man. He takes refuge in a old ladies home where he had hidden ten thousand dollars. But the lady makes a deal with him saying he can only stay if he gives her all but $150 of it.
Months have passed and Rico’s career has been destroyed. He sleeps in a extremely cheap hotel and has started drinking a lot He becomes angered when they read out that that the police detective called him a coward. He soon calls the police and is found when they trace the call back to him. The detective discovers him on a street and shoots and kills him through a billboard, which ironically was advertising Joe and Olgas dancing.
Throughout the story Rico was successful but at the end he loses, whereas Joe and Olga live happily and earn an honest living doing what they love. One of the morals of the story is that crime pays -- but not for very long.
