People such as Jeffrey Dahmer are not capable of forming a conscience. According to the definition of conscience in the Encyclopedia Britannica, (2018), in order for a person to form a conscience, they have to have a personal sense of the moral content of their own conduct, intentions, or character with regard to a feeling of obligation to do right or be good. Jeffrey Dahmer didn’t have a personal sense to have a moral content of his own conduct, intentions, or character sense to do the right thing. All of his intentions were to harm people for his own gratification. With the charges that he was convicted on; torture, body mutilation, rape, and murder are all very bad charges in the judicial system. Many of his later murders involved necrophilia, cannibalism, and the permanent preservation of body parts, with him typically preserving all or part of the skeleton (Wikipedia, 2018). Jeffrey Dahmer’s morals were to dismember, and store body parts, as this same type of behavior was reported by one of his friends that stated he did the same to insects and animals while growing up. His ethics were to do as he pleased to satisfy his gratification of harming others. Trying to teach people the difference between what’s good and bad morals, will not be able to form a reasonable moral/ethical behavior. Morals explain why a certain action is wrong, or why we ought to act in certain ways. We can tell and teach people such as Jeffrey Dahmer about morals and ethics, but they will never be able to apply it to their daily lives.
