“The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want” by Ben Stein. If there is something somebody wants or desires, What would they give up to get it? Their life? Their love? Jay Gatsby from F.Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby gives up everything he has achieved for something that he wants. Although in the end he doesn’t even get it. Through Jay Gatsby’s determination, Fitzgerald conveys his agreement that, people get what they desire by first deciding what they want. Gatsby’s aspiration for wealth made him realize what he wanted in life. While working under Dan Cody he experienced a life of wealth ,and knew that he wanted to live that kind of life. Jay does these things just to impress and prove he has made something of himself. He claims lots of achievements like attending Oxford and growing up in the midwest. While most of these are hoax it is no hoax that he is involved in organized crime. One of his business partners is Meyer Wolfsheim the infamous crime boss. Gatsby tries to mask the fact he is involved in any illegal in front of Nick, but Gatsby explains to Nick what Meyer Wolfsheim does, ” Meyer Wolfsheim? No he’s a gambler, he’s the man who fixed the World’s Series back in 1919” (Fitzgerald 56) . Gatsby tries to convince Nick Wolfsheim hasn’t done anything viciously bad, but is just a mere gambler. Gatsby wants his character to appeal to Nick, so Nick could ask Daisy over for him. Everything Gatsby did was for Daisy, every move was thought out to Daisy’s standards. Gatsby’s aimed to get Daisy back at all costs, he did everything in his power to try and win her back. Nick explained,” He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths--so he could 'come over' some afternoon to a stranger's garden” (Fitzgerald 63). Nick explains that Gatsby waited and planned ,for 5 years to meet up with Daisy for an afternoon. This baffled him because of the amount of work and planning for 5 years that went into just one afternoon. This illustrates just how much Gatsby cared for
