In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald Jay Gatsby thinks he has achieved the American dream because he is rich in money, but he was alone which in reality made him the poorest of all. Gatsby is a very wealthy man, he has a very big house and has a lot of expensive things that a lot of people would kill to have. But he has one flaw. He has only a couple people in his life that genuinely care about him. Of course people take advantage of him and act like they care about him when it comes to his parties but when it came down to his death, none of that mattered. Which in the end made him poorest of all. In the novel Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby as an example of what people think the American dream is. After he met her he had to go off to war and their plan was to wait for each other and spend the rest of their lives together after that. While he was off at war, Daisy met another man named Tom Buchanan. He was very wealthy. She fell in love with him and forgot about Gatsby. She married him because he had money and Gatsby didn't at the time but if he did she would have waited for him. When Gatsby came back from the military he began to get very wealthy. He was devastated when he found out that Daisy had gotten married. He decided to try and get her back. He bought this big mansion across her dock over on west egg. In the beginning, Gatsby was a poor army boy who fell in love with a rich girl named Daisy. Knowing from their different circumstances, he could not marry her. So Gatsby left to accumulate a lot of money. Daisy, not being able to wait for Gatsby, marries a rich man named Tom. Tom believes that it is okay for a man to be unfaithful but it is not okay for the woman to be. This caused a lot of conflict in their marriage and caused Daisy to be very unhappy. The American dream is an idea that every American has an equal chance of success. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald shows us this is not the case. Fitzgerald wrote the character Jay Gatsby as a tragic American hero. Jay Gatsby went from a nobody to a millionaire and most people believe that he had achieved the American dream. However, he did not achieve the American dream because he lost a piece of himself in his pursuit of his supposedly incorruptible dream.

Scott Fitzgerald, deals heavily with the concept of the American Dream as it existed during the Roaring Twenties, and details its many flaws through the story of Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and ambitious entrepreneur who comes to a tragic end after trying to win the love of the moneyed Daisy Buchanan, using him to dispel the fantastic myth of the self-made man and the underlying falsities of the American Dream. Despite Gatsby’s close association with the American Dream, however, Fitzgerald presents the young capitalist as a genuinely good person despite the flaws that caused his undoing. This portrayal of Gatsby as a victim of the American Dream is made most clear during his funeral, to which less than a handful of people attend. To explain the basis behind their relationship; Gatsby first met daisy at a party at her house that her parents were hosting for young army men in hopes that their daughter would find that could be a suitable husband. Soon after they became so close and fell madly in love. Daisy came from old money and gatsby had no money at all which made their relationship come to a halt when Gatsby asked to marry Daisy.
