In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald Jay Gatsby thinks he has achieved the American dream because he is rich in money, but he was alone which in reality made him the poorest of all. Gatsby is a very wealthy man, he has a very big house and has a lot of expensive things that a lot of people would kill to have. But he has one flaw. He has only a couple people in his life that genuinely care about him. Of course people take advantage of him and act like they care about him when it comes to his parties but when it came down to his death, none of that mattered. Which in the end made him poorest of all. In the novel Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby as an example of what people think the American dream is. He also met his first and only love Daisy Buchanan. They fell deeply in love with each other. He knew soon after he had met her that he could never love anyone else as much as he loved her. After he met her he had to go off to war and their plan was to wait for each other and spend the rest of their lives together after that. While he was off at war, Daisy met another man named Tom Buchanan. He was very wealthy. She fell in love with him and forgot about Gatsby. She married him because he had money and Gatsby didn't at the time but if he did she would have waited for him. When Gatsby came back from the military he began to get very wealthy. He was devastated when he found out that Daisy had gotten married. He decided to try and get her back. He bought this big mansion across her dock over on west egg. He would throw these huge extravagant parties that were open to anyone to come in hopes that she would show up one day. Every thing he did was to try and get her back. She was his America
