“Mutual Misunderstanding” discusses the perception of Muslims in European media. Author, Irmak Ozer explores how French Muslims have been marginalized since the events of 9/11. The French government is attempting to strip Islamic identity, in hope of creating a secular nation. The post 9/11 media has enforced the stereotype that head and face coverings worn by women are a potential security threat. The article briefly touches on Danish Cartoon Crisis, where a offensive cartoon was published of the Islamic sacred Muhammad, the media chose to place attention on angry Islamic rather than Danish error. Through this publicity, fear of Islam was instilled in the west. (Ozer 2011)

As stated by McCormick “Religion is now the single most important political- ideological default mechanism in global conflict”(2006). An Us vs. Them mentality has been adopted in regards to the relation between East and West, ultimately, Christianity and Islamic faith. Conservatives Christians in the West have repeatedly practiced the use of fear to instil power. Looking back you can see this in the fight for African American rights and now prominently in the “War against Terror. The mindset adopted by the West after the events of 9/11 has very black and white image view of issues, making it near impossible to get the real story from either side. It is important to recognize that the information broadcasted to our homes in North America is not showing the whole picture.
