As you may or may not already know, diabetes is a non-communicable disease. Learning about diabetes interests me because my grandmother and grandfather are both diabetic. I see what they go through every day with pricking their finger, injecting insulin and watching what they eat. It seems to be a hassle, but for them- it’s their life. Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the body is unable to produce any- or enough- insulin which causes high glucose levels in return. There are 3 different types of diabetes that people are most familiar with. Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease where that person would need insulin from the second they’re diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes, which may take months or even years for a person to require insulin. With type 2 diabetes, the affected person is usually older and overweight. The third type that people are most familiar with is Gestational diabetes. GD occurs during pregnancy. Around 28 weeks gestation, the pregnant woman is instructed to go for a one hour glucose test to check for diabetes. Although diabetes can be genetic, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re prone to get it. Controlling and checking your blood sugar helps to treat diabetes, as well as insulin therapy, regular check-ups/monitoring, and exercising. If you’re diabetic, you’ll find that at first, it’s frustrating and time consuming to treat for your diabetes. You’ll get the hang of it soon enough. Preventing diabetes is possible, and somewhat easy. Studies have shown that 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week can decrease your chances of getting diabetes, as well as eating healthier. Keeping a nutrition log and a fitness journal are good starts to help the motivation for preventing diabetes. Watching your sugar intake is also a good thing to do if you’re trying to prevent this
