I. Introduction
A. Quentin: Malnourished = lack of calories
B. Lauren: Most people think calorie intake is #1, but nutrients are just as important. People need to eat from a variety of different food groups—protein, dairy, grains, fruits, and vegetables. (Penner, 2015)
C. Quentin: Yeah, but you can’t forget to drink lots of water!
II. Dehydration
A. Quentin: The body is made up of mostly water. Approximately 60-75 percent of the human body is composed of water. (Shaw, 2014)
B. Lauren: Oh, really?
C. Quentin: Yeah, water is essential in the balance of all of the systems of the body, and being even slightly dehydrated can mess up your body’s functions. Water is essential in transporting nutrients to your cells and is critical for absorption of …show more content…

C. Rachel: The effect of starvation and calcium and vitamin d deficiencies contribute to stunted growth, bad bone quality, and an earlier onset of osteoporosis in later life. (Kueper et al. 2015)
IV. Nutrients
A. Lauren: In general, if you have a lack of nutrients, it can cause a lot of problems. For example, having a malnourished diet leads to weight loss, low immunity, and mucosal damage. Once someone is malnourished, they usually encounter diarrhea, malabsorption, loss of appetite, and a fever. A lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to poor growth, impaired intellect, and even death. Also, it will make you more susceptible to infection, leading to malaria, measles, respiratory diseases, a loss of brain functions, or even parasites. (Katona, 2008)
B. Levi: Oh that’s interesting! Did you know a big contributor to malnutrition is starvation?

A. Levi: For instance, during World War II many people suffered from starvation. There were four tons of food and equipment for every American soldier compared to two pounds for Japanese soldiers.
