H. Sterling Burnett, a senior fellow with the National Center for Policy Analysis, writes about wind power in his article "Wind Power Puffery." He says that the benefits of wind power are usually overstated despite its limitations and drawbacks. Wind power hardly improves air pollution. When wind speed is not in suitable range, wind towers don't operate. This is followed by supplement power from power plants which cause the emissions of pollutants and CO2. Being similar to highways and industrial zones, wind farms are very noisy. They also cause unsightly landscapes instead of "green parks" which was imagined before. Although wind farms require the acreage of land hundreds times as much as common power plants, they just can produce a tiny amount of power. Worse, wind power affect negatively environment. Wind farms put some birds and bats in jeopardy. I strongly agree with the author’s ideas. Firstly, wind farms are …show more content…
In details, wind turbines kill birds and bats including protected species like Bald and Golden Eagles. The cause of this problem is that wind farms are often located in travel routes for migratory birds where wind blows continuously. In "Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy," Roy D'Silva (2014) indicates that due to the staggering height of the windmills, birds are often at collision course with them, and a significant number of deaths have occurred due to this reason. Wind turbines are usually made of blades which rotate constantly and ferociously. Because the blades are usually put high up in the air, they kill birds that fly over it. There is a huge number of birds killed by wind turbines every year. Burnett (2004) also illustrates that scientists estimate as many as 44,000 birds have been killed over the past 20 years by wind turbines in the Altamont Pass, San Francisco. The decrease in the number of birds can put ecosystem in
Even though the wind industry is an effective industry, it can be harmful to the animals of the land; birds in particular. It is said that 140,000 to 328,000 birds a year meet their end at the hands of the wind industry. The powerful blades are constantly moving, and the birds are constantly in motion. The turbines are stronger though than the flock of birds. Wind farms also take up a lot of land and affect the environment with disturbance of space and the land. Birds have less space to fly, build nests, and get
I personally do not like windy days. However, wind could be helping us more than we realize. We could be using the wind to produce energy. This is what wind turbines do and now I will be researching them to determine the physics involved with them and how they work, their history, along with some statistics from the United States. Then I will go in-depth for the wind turbines of Texas, Washington, and Kansas and compare them.
Nijhuis presents a series of detailed explanations that argue in favor of and against the development of wind farms. In the first portion of “Selling the Wind”, the
Wind energy can play a critical role in saving our planet from the negative effects of energy powered by fossil fuels. Wind turbines work effectively at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. For instance, a single utility scale wind turbine can prevent the emission of 5,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere a year by displacing the power generated by fossil fuels. Also, a single 750-kilowatt turbine can produce roughly 2 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. Turbines of this nature are the ones now being used in power plants around the world (Wind Energy Weekly). One good example is California. Their wind power plants displace 4.5 billion pounds of CO2 each year with the 3 billion kilowatt hours of energy they produce. To put it into an environmental perspective, that is as much CO2 as could be absorbed by a forest covering 1100 square miles (Wind Energy Weekly). Although wind energy has little to no impact on the environment when it comes to air pollution or greenhouse gases, there are other environmental concerns surrounding this form of energy production. Some of the concerns about wind energy include visual impacts, birds and other living resources, lightning and noise (Wind Energy Development).
[Divert ‘green energy’ interests away from dams and hydropower and towards wind and solar power]
Wind Energy is a viable industry that has become a valuable energy source. The energy generated from wind is clean and efficient. The wind energy industry helps to ensure that electric demands are met, wildlife impact is minimal, the environment is not devastated, as well as creates new jobs during the construction of wind farms, daily operations, manufacturing components, and exporting components to foreign countries.

The plan could create over 50,000 jobs, and is estimated that it would save 17 megatons of greenhouse gas emissions every year. Some people (16% who took a survey) are opposed to this method of energy because they believe it will lower property values, and some say they are loud, and some simply don’t want a huge white spinning machine in their back yard. However, many wind farms have become tourist
Reading up information and searching for clues (which were not extremely easy), turns out to have broadened my knowledge on Nature and Biomimicry itself and that there are so many people already using wind turbines to harvest the winds energy and know how the world can be saved. Therefore I have come to the conclusion and have seen that my hypothesis has been proven right.
Wind power is another form of solar power. Wind isn’t only a clean fuel source, but it is one of the most inexpensive e alternative sources of energy. Just as long wind continues to blow and the sun shines then wind power can produce energy to send to many different areas. There aren’t many locations that have continuous wind. And because of that the widespread development of wind power isn’t as great as it could be. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to this energy source, the disadvantages should be taken just as seriously. Wind power can harm animals, there was a study that stated birds were coming in contact with turbines and dying. For many people the noise from the turbines is unbearable, and that’s something else that should be taken into
First and foremost, unlike power plants that rely on combustion of fossil fuels, wind turbines do not produce atmospheric emissions. Strangely enough, wind is a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by the irregular heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the variations of the earth 's surface, and rotation of the earth. This wind flow, or kinetic energy, when "harvested" by modern wind turbines, can be used to generate electricity. There is an abundance of wind to meet our needs, “the potential of [the total] wind power [in the world] is… 20 times more than what the entire human population needs” (Maehlum). Currently, wind power is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy technologies available, costing between four and six cents per kilowatt-hour, depending upon the wind
Each one of us has their own opinion about what wind turbines do and not what they are actually meant for. Wind turbines are meant to be an energy saving method that can be used ...
Wind power is one of the most sustainable ways of generating electricity as no toxic emissions are produced; it does not add to global warming and is one of the most available sources of renewable energy and theoretically it is an infinite source of energy. On sufficiently windy areas, wind turbines are one of the most economical methods of generating electricity, which makes it appealing to many individuals, governments and organizations. Due to this it is the fastest growing source of electricity in the world (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014) with a 10% increase in yearly additions installed in 2012 compared with 2011 (Global Wind Energy Council, 2012). However the proportion of energy that can be harnessed through wind power is restricted by the cost of the infrastructure needed, construction, the amount of wind that occurs and that there are only a narrow number of sites within the UK that are windy enough for the wind turbines to be worth installing.
...he better and enable their children to live in a cleaner environment. Building wind turbines in some areas might not be as beneficial. But it will benefit certain areas more than others because there are more winds flowing in a certain area. Places where there are more land will be perfect to build these wind turbines because it will generate huge amounts of electricity that can power many buildings. The area of location should be chosen with utmost care where there is an abundance of wind that in consistent. Since wind energy is a renewable technology that does not contribute to global warming, thus it will make a better and healthier
