There are many different type of prescription drugs that are given to us by doctors for many different reasons. You may get septa for a mouth infection, penicillin for a throat infection or many other different kinds. Addiction is a complex psychiatric disorder that consists of social and psychological factors, but at its most basic level it is a biological process. Addiction may come in many forms, but its primary choice of substance is drugs. In particular, prescription medications in the form of pills have become a major health problem, not only to those addicted but the clinicians who prescribe them. In order to fully understand this disorder, considering what brain mechanisms and functions are involved with addiction, the next area to look into is the factors that make the prescription drugs so addictive, along with long term effects, and to discover any new treatment options out in practice today, whether it be through medicine and/or counseling.
As I’m sure you would agree, doctors have to stop over prescribing their patients with opioids. Although opioids are used as pain medication and are prescribed more to patients who are fresh out of surgery or have chronic pain, it can become highly addictive. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 11.5 million people have misused the opioids they were prescribed(Thompson). Their misuse can be due to the fact that their doctors are prescribing them a ridiculous amount of opioids, instead of just giving them regular ibuprofen. It is said that everybody has their own type of medicine that works for them, however on certain occasions not all of these medicines are prescribed and many strongly oppose for this type of medicine to be used. John Lennon was one of the many who used un-prescribed medicine. Lennon and many others agree that the use of hallucinogenic drugs peacefully cleared their mind and made them understand what they meant to the world and connected them to everything around them in a deeper level. Which lead to the creation of the well-known Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. quote “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimension’s”. No medicine had ever helped them achieve that inner peace and understanding that they were looking for until they tried hallucinogens in a medicinal way. After what is known as the “hippie era” Hallucinogenic drugs were made illegal and societies view went from the drug that made a person peaceful and lovable to the drug that was repugnant and awfully dangerous. Although hallucinogens are considered dangerous drugs not to be dabbled with by the average person, it has recently been proven to work as a successful therapy proving that they are safe and raising the question if they should be recognized as a way of therapy.

There is treatment out in communities that can help a person that is abusing the use of prescription drugs. Although, The treatment for a person who abuse prescribed drugs vary. But, counseling and psychotherapy is available in communities. Doctors can also tell if one of their patient have had treatment or in the process of having treatment. Doctors or families are the ones to refer their patient or family member to a center for treatment (“Treatment and Drugs”). There are different types of therapy for a patient that suffering from Prescription Drug Abuse. The treatment is usually a 12-step program but there are other programs included. Xanax is the most well known anti-anxiety medication on the market today. It is not abnormal to hear somewhere in the media, typically in television shows and even movies, to hear a character refer to the drug. They refer to it in a way of saying things such as “I need a Xanax” or before going into a stressful situation noting that they “took a Xanax”. As popular as this medication is the purpose of and effects on the body the drug has, as well as the likelihood for addiction are unknown. Xanax can be abused and has a long history of causing dependance in people who take it and are unaware of the medications strong effects and ability to cause dependance.
