It is a good idea to learning how to reduce a little one’s anxiety while at the same time encouraging their cooperation. If children are made to feel comfortable, they will be more trusting. It should be colorful and fun. Think about creating a space where the children could “play doctor”. Role-playing is an excellent way for little ones to learn as well as lose some of their anxiety. Parents can read to them age-appropriate books about CT’s, X-rays, or MR’s. Encourage parents to bring in a favorite blanket or toy. Keep the atmosphere light and positive as you head for the procedural room. Remember to smile and call the child by their first name. Tell them they are about to be the star of the show and you have a really-cool machine you want to show them. Consider the parent to be your greatest helper. Having mommy or daddy near will also lessen a child’s fears. If the child is old enough to understand, sit them up on the table and explain the equipment and procedure in simple terms. Aside of immobilizing devices, play a game of freeze or bubble-mouth to help them hold their breath and stand still. A tv with cartoons or strategically placed fun posters can be just enough distraction for you to push the exposure button. Radiographers have a technical job to accomplish but second to that is helping the child have a positive experience. A happy place helps children to relax.
