When you first get on a site like GoFundMe all these heartwarming stories pop up. They are called campaigns. When someone creates a GoFundMe and give their story and pictures they have created a campaign. The most current one, a fund set up by the company seeking donations for those in Brussel’s right now. Brussel’s airport and metro station were attacked today and at least 30 killed with hundreds injured. GoFundMe created a campaign to start raising money until an actual charity is created for the victims of this horrific incidence. In this instance, they are donating all the money, not taking out their usual 8%. Most of the ones on display of the main page are tragic stories seeking peace, you don’t see many “bad” campaigns. That’s the issue with these crowdfunding sites, people use it for bad. Determining what is a good campaign and what’s a bad one can be very difficult. One that I questioned was about a band that had their van and trailer stolen with all their gear and were asking for money to get all new items. The person could have just created a completely false need with fake pictures because they want the money and they’re taking advantage of the good people who are so very giving. Or their need could be viewed as bad because to others it’s selfish or unnecessary to be asking people to give away their hard earned money. There’s campaigns for “Tired Of Being Broke”, “Help Me throw money at these strippers”, and even “I need half for this abortion” (Bossip). One teen was sick with bone cancer and someone created a fake GoFundMe for him. The way they figured out the campaign was fake? The creator spelled the teens name wrong.
