Doctor A doctor is a surgeon or physician that tends to the medical needs of a person. A doctor is viewed as a smart and confident human being. This is an accurate assumption. A doctor is more than just this, he/she is a person who has devoted his/her life to studying the human body. "A doctor should be opaque to his patients and, like a mirror, should show them nothing but what is shown to him" Sigmund Freud. A doctor starts his/her day in a private office or hospital. The day includes : examining patients taking down their histories; order laboratory tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic procedures; refer patients to specialists; prescribe medications and treatments; provide emergency care; deliver babies and provide pre- and post-natal care; provide counseling and support. All of these things differ with the specialization of a doctor. Long hours are included with this job, but hours differ depending on the area of expertise. Doctors work 12 hour shifts while others make schedules open for patients to decide . Practitioners work individually, spending time doing paperwork or meeting with patients.
