Teaching English grammar is an essential part of the teaching and learning process in the Bhutanese classroom. The grammar plays vital role in order to acquire writing and speaking skills. The Bhutanese students lack behind in writing and speaking skills. The Bhutanese students’ English marks are low compare to other subjects in the school. The students in the school speak lesser in English than Dzongkha. This is due to lack of basic grammar rules knowledge that the students have. Teaching English grammar will not only equip the students in building the structure of words, clauses, and sentences but also help to deal with the writing essays, letters, poems and stories. The grammar helps the students to understand the spoken speech. As and when the students understand the spoken language they will listen more to it. If the students of Bhutan are to enhance their listening skills they need to be competent in grammar knowledge. With an ability and knowledge of the grammar, he or she can easily understand the literal and technical meanings of the speaker. On other hand, the speaker too need good grammar knowledge to make the listener fully understand. Leggett & Mead (1978 p.18) have stated that, “If a grammarian’s description is good, these generalizations help guide us in using our language more efficiently”. The grammar is the key to open the language whereby the encoder and decoder shall have successful communication. With correct use of grammar rules the communicators enjoy the charm of language and its intentions. When there is enough content on grammar skills, one shall be in a position to acquire the meanings and flaws to which he or she can analyze and grape the charm of the public speech. Usually the people with sound grammar knowledge watches more movies and listen to the news. Even, they cherish listening to BBC news and update world news as they find easy to understand the meanings from it. Teaching of grammar is parts and parcels to love English language. The other perks for taking this course is to challenge myself and be more prepared for college. I believe that I could get a higher score on my ACT by taking this class. I hope to be able to read and comprehend words fast and efficiently. Also to improve my writing skills and spelling, I am really bad at spelling. Lastly, I want to improve my critical thinking skills when reading a story. To accomplish my hopes I can work on practice tests and spelling words. I can also read a book and stop in between certain chapters to think about the author is trying to say.
A large part of an English teacher’s job deals with helping students find their own voices amidst the many teachings of their parents and peers. A student’s voice can be their values, their interests, and their perspectives of the world in which they live. Their voice can be their critical questioning of the many situations they face, whether in a text, the school cafeteria, or a park after school. It is the job of an English teacher to aid in finding this voice through their writing. It is by putting words and thoughts down on paper that a student can sometimes feel comfortable enough to take risks and find their true voices. Although traditional grammar instruction has long been thought to improve this skill, this is no longer the case. Instead, by providing a classroom environment in which students are immersed in classic literature from many genres including poetry, short stories, and novels, students will learn how to harness grammar for their own purposes of finding their voice in their writing.
It is not uncommon to say that grammar instruction plays an important role in language teaching. Regarding the status and importance of grammar teaching, a variety of opinions have been made. Batstone (1994) states that “language without grammar would be chaotic: countless words without the indispensable guidelines for how they can be ordered and modified” (p. 4). More vividly, Wang (2010) makes two similes. She compares grammar to the frame of a house, which is a decisive factor to ensure the solidness of it. Additionally, she regards grammar as a walking stick, whose function is to help and support students to learn English. Thus, the nature of grammar instruction manifests its own significance as it helps students enhance their overall language proficiency by integrating grammar into other aspects of learning, like listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The English language has been taught for many years in Nepal. To glance it’s history, started when Rana people established durbar high school at Dakhchowk, Thapathali. At that time, they had invited two English teachers to manage the school and the curriculum design. Since then, though there were no strong government policy documents regarding teaching of English. The school level curriculum includes English as a subject. It has been taught as compulsory subject in the school from grade one.
In this modern world, learning a new language is a huge endeavor in a person’s life. In order for someone to learn a new language, it is necessary for them to learn the language structure, its phonemes, facial expressions, word collocations, and other detail aspects related to learning a language. When communicating with someone that can fluently speak the language you are trying to learn, talking to them may be a challenge because it takes awhile for someone who is foreign with the language to find the right words to properly express the message you are trying to convey. When learning the English language, I usually focus on learning words through images and books. I hardly ever translate the words to or from my language because translating it wouldn’t really be exactly the meaning I was looking for. Even though I grew up in a different country that spoke a different language, it was a great idea to learn other languages like English to be able to understand and communicate with other people who don’t speak my language.
Teaching English to children has become a worldwide phenomenon due to the international expansion of English teaching combined with general commitment of governments worldwide to reduce the starting age of learning English and include it in the curriculum in the primary school (Pinter, 2006, p.3). As English has become the common language in the world, it has also become one of the components of primary and even pre-school education in the English as a Foreign Language teaching contexts. In teaching English to young learners, age plays a crucial role in what we teach and how we teach it, since a young learner class is different from older learner and adult class in terms of the learners’ language learning needs, language competences, and the cognitive skills. It is highly important to show the differences of these three learner groups keeping in mind the fact that every learner is unique and such lists can only reflect generalizations (Harmer, 2007). According to Lynne Cameron (2001, p.1) there are some characteristics of young learners which distinguish young learners with older learners or adult learners. First, children are often more enthusiastic and lively as learners. Second, as a learner children wants to please the teacher rather that their peer group. Third, children can interest to something more quickly and also lose interest more quickly. Fourth, children less able to keep themselves motivated on tasks they find difficult.
Fluency remains the skill many of EFL students struggle to master. In other words, speaking English correctly, automatically, and confidently are significant elements to succeed in learning the language. In spite of the significance of speaking English fluently, we noticed that many EFL students who have good command over the language have a great deal of vocabulary, and have great scores in paper and pencil tests. Unfortunately, when they practice to speak the language, they can't speak well due to lots of inhibitions. They worry about speaking the language. Sometimes they can't even understand native speakers' speech. These are some issues faced by many EFL students who live in countries where the language is not commonly used.
