In today's world, you can be successful in various ways. One main skill that is important for success and my overall life is reading. Reading has become less of a practice over the years, which means not many people are learning. “Less than a third of 13-year-olds were daily readers in 2007, a 14 percent decline from 20 years earlier,” (Geri Clouston). It is encouraged that people develop this skill as it is highly valuable and essential to function in everyday life. Reading is important because it improves communication, expands your knowledge and creativity. Every aspect in my life requires reading, whether it's in college, at home, or at work. Lacking the ability to read makes it difficult to manage any subject and complete any homework assignments. Many teachers assign reading as homework such as research papers, or chapters in books. It would be very challenging to keep up with assignments and get good grades without reading skills. It is extremely necessary when writing essays or just writing anything in general. Reading over what you wrote is important so you can edit and correct any errors. If I didn’t have the skills to read, I wouldn’t be able to write this essay and read over it. Many students complete tasks quicker and more efficient because of their reading skills. On the other hand, someone who doesn't know how to read will have trouble reading the material and increases the time spent on it. To start off with, filling out applications and resumes becomes impossible to do. Employers look for someone who has good reading and writing skills, since they are skills that are used in performing many tasks such as reports, paperwork, and communication. Those who have great reading skills have more opportunities and advantages than others. For example, since I want to pursue a career in the medical field, it will consist of reading a lot to keep up with all the latest information and paperwork to fill out. It’s also required to read since doctors read labels and instructions. Imagine if a doctor didn't know how to read so she gave out the wrong medicine. Without reading, I will not succeed in my career and I would perform poorly. Keeping a job would prove to be very difficult because it would take much more time to finish a task and follow your boss’s orders. Reading is a way to improve communication and it helps to communicate with your peers, professors, or bosses. Making a good impression in your career is important as well. Poor reading skills is a red flag to employers and it can limit job chances. It is highly impossible to get a job without reading skills. Ultimately, it is apparent that reading is an important key to function in life. It opens many doors to opportunities, such as jobs, schools, and social advancements.
