Harmer (1991) states that if language structures make up the skeleton of language, it is vocabulary that provides the vital organs and the flesh. Therefore, an ability to use grammatical structure does not have any potential for expressing meaning unless words are used. Vocabulary is considered one of the challenging skills in the teaching and learning process. It is evident that vocabulary plays crucial role in conveying and interpreting messages in any language whether it is first, second or foreign one .Even though, it is neglected from curricular for a long time, where the focus based on grammar as a separate subject. Passive vocabulary usual find by learners in reading or listening. It is called receptive vocabulary because learners just receive but they do not produce. Passive vocabulary means the words that the students recognize and understand them when they occur in a context or students need someone to say something that help them recall the word meanings. The students usually find passive vocabulary in listening or reading materials. They will find the meaning of the word when they read the words in a text and will know the meaning of the unknown word, on the text.

Importance of learning vocabulary

Krashen (1993) mentions the importance of vocabulary especially in the host community, because EFL learners who know grammar rules and they have poor vocabulary will face difficulties and problems in communication with native speakers.

Rivers (1968) states that vocabulary cannot be taught. It can be presented, explained, included in all kinds of activities but ultimately, it is only the individual who learns it. She urges teachers to make learners learn how to learn vocabulary and enable them to find their own ways of expanding and organizing their word store (Rivers 1983).
