The tragic story of Veronica Climbie is an unfortunate example that highlights the impact that not only unprofessional practice but what miscommunication amongst disciplines can have on the life of a client, in this case, a young and innocent little girl. The Veronica Climbie Inquiry (lord lamming, 2003) was established after the tragic and preventable death of a young abuse victim in the UK caused an understandable amount of outrage and consequent reassessment of the functioning and protocol of many multi-disciplinary domains related to her untimely death. In the report, Lamming makes numerous recommendations to improve the child protection sector and prevent unnecessary deaths like Veronicas from happening again, one of these such recommendations is the need to enhance communication between the many disciplines involved with the complex issue of child abuse and protection, and the need for agencies to take accountability of their workers, their decisions and their actions within this context. It is unfortunate that the death of an innocent child had to be the catalyst for positive change and development within multi-disciplinary practice, nonetheless , we can see that a push in policy to create a greater structure for accountability and communication in complex social issues that require interprofessional collaboration can help us overcome these negligent and potentially detrimental barriers of
In today’s health care system it is important that students are educated and are also collaborative practice-ready when working with other health care professionals to achieve consistency, continuous and reliable care for their patients (Wood, Flavell, Vanstolk, Bainbridge & Nasmith, 2009). Interprofessional education is this concept that teaches students to work and learn by effectively collaborating with other health care professionals to maximise their potential as a profession (WHO, 2010). This in turn will teach students to be work-force ready to share his or her professional knowledge whilst understanding and being respectful of others’ work. This strengthens the workforce as it allows health professionals to make quick, informed decisions as it arises resulting in the delivery of the highest standard quality of care to their patients. Interprofessional education and team collaboration plays an important role in overcoming many challenges faced in the health industry. By understanding the concept of interprofessional education and collaboration, this will help to maximise the professionals’ skills leading to the provision of high and effective quality of care to achieve improved health outcomes (WHO, 2010). In order for the health care system to provide optimal and safe patient care, a number of mechanisms can be implemented to achieve this. Team collaboration and effective communication are the two factors that will provide safe and quality patient care (Gum, Prideaux, Sweet & Greenhill, 2012). An environment with a strong, collaborative working culture will reduce the communication barriers and will in turn decrease the conflicts that may arise within patient care.

Evidence-based practice is important to consider when researching for interventions, further knowledge, or help to guide a new idea in the health professions. Evidence-based practice is comprised of three significant concepts: respect and awareness for the targeted population’s values, previous clinical practice or experience with that population, and systematic research to establish a better understanding of what is already known about the study’s focus. These concepts are all taken into consideration when designing and conducting a study because it provides a more valid and credible source for others.

Communication and collaboration are an integral part of interprofessional health care teams. There could be possible barriers to communication and collaboration that could affect the entire team’s success. Personal values and expectation, personality differences, culture and ethnicity, and gender could affect how some individuals respond according to a patient’s care or needs(O’Daniel, 2008). For example, if someone comes from a background where they refrain from being assertive or challenging opinions openly, it could be difficult for that person to speak up if they think differently from the other team members. During training caseworkers are all offered identical resources, but they all have adapted the resources to fit their individual styles. For example, the origin for conducting initial interviews are similar, but documenting information differs. Some case workers have adapted a shorthanded note taking style, were as others use the long handed style. When working as a Social Workers eliminating your personal view and beliefs, are a tough job. Once case workers have established that rapport with clients, they create an opening and trusting relationship. The variance in communication styles among case workers, can create an unproductive barrier in my internship. This past week I was working on an assignment for a case worker, and I was having a diffcult time on writing the important information. After some thought, I was able to request help from the case worker. After speaking with the caseworker, I was able to complete assignment, adapting her style of writing.
