For many years, Ellis Island had been used for a variety of reasons. Ellis Island is indeed a very important piece of United States history. Many people who have relatives or ancestors who migrated over to the United States may have some experience with Ellis Island. Even though many people have heard about it, a large amount of those people do not really know the significant importance of Ellis Island. Ellis Island is an important part of United States history because it played an important military role, it allowed foreign immigrants to enter the United States, and Ellis Island changed immigration laws plus it evolved regulations.

On page three of the article “History of Ellis Island” it states “Castle Garden… served as the New York State immigration station from 1855 to 1890, and approximately eight million immigrants, mostly from Northern and Western Europe, passed through its doors.” There was such a large amount of immigrants coming into the United States that the government turned Ellis Island into an immigration center. Ellis Island gave immigrants new opportunities to be successful moving into the United States. On page three of the article “History of Ellis Island” it states “Over the next 62 years, more than 12 million were to follow through this port of entry.” This quote is referring to how Ellis Island acted as an immigration portal and how it allowed foreign immigrants to enter the United States. Some reasons why immigrants moved to the United States was because of religious restrictions, political instabilities, and some came looking for work.
