In this field, there are four learning goals that early programs have for a young child. The four learning goals are knowledge, skills, disposition and emotional states. With a successful caregiving and early education, it can bring a positive outcome to a child’s life. What a child learns in their early years are things that will continue to help them along in their future in school and in the real world. The question of early education should be investigated and controlled on the arrange level because it has a very important impact on the economy, social structure and cultural level of different countries. Educators can facilitate the children with different material and environment in the classrooms that are in the early learning centers. The children need to develop their minds cognitively. “Children actively construct knowledge as they manipulate and explore their world” (Berk 2007). Dr. Seuss wrote, “You’re off to great places. Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting. So get on your Way”. The role of the early childhood educator, while rewarding, can sometimes feel as is you are climbing a mountain. Educators have to consider how to implement curriculum, instruction, management, and technology in the classroom. Educators also have to provide an environment where all children feel safe and nurtured. Preschool programs started in the early 20th century in the United States and grew in popularity in 1970’s. It was realized at that time that children need early education to be prepared for elementary school. For low-income families, federal government started a program called Head Start in 1965. It began as an eight-week summer program to prepare low-income children for elementary school. Head Start is one of the longest-running programs and it has served more than thirty-two million children since its inception. (Office of Head Start). The program has expanded from an eight-week summer program to a full day yearlong program with various program options. The purpose of such programs is to prepare the young children for challenges of life.
Some people think that pre-school programs only target children from poor families. However, for many years they created an opportunity for children from middle and upper – income families to get free education as well. The reason why they targeted the poor because the government would pay the program more money and it would as be considered a taxed write off. Every child that attends a pre-k program would have a higher graduation rate and a lower delinquency rate. Preschool is not only beneficial to the child but also to the entire country. Forty-eight percent of children from low-income homes are not starting school ready to learn. Seventy-five percent of children from middle- income are starting school ready to learn. Parents whom are well-educated read to their child an extra hour a day than those who are not. Early learning certainly affects a child brain structure and creates an aspiration to learn more past age level. It is a proven fact that they are less likely to need assiantace from the government and drop out of high school. They even are less likely to be in trouble with the law and more like to go to college and become very successful. Early education includes all children from birth to age eight. Opting to provide excellent early education comes with many opportunity costs. Opportunity costs are losing potential gains when choosing one option versus the other. Anything other than giving children excellent early education comes with an opportunity cost that does not look forward to maximizing the future of next generations. It is important to include education early on in a child’s life to help secure the positive effects this will have on their development into adulthood.
