This project proposal will look at a specific community and identify a specific need within the area and aim to offer a solution through an action plan. It will refer back to the previously conducted community profile to assist with the project proposal. The community profile will provide vital information for the community and identify the key areas of need within the area. It will look at the definition of community and social capital and see how they link. It will look at the importance of social capital and the affect it has on members of the community. When devising a project proposal, it is essential to look at the demographics of the area to ensure that the proposal is appropriate and beneficial for the people in the community. Once the demographics have been outlined, the project itself can be looked at. The project proposal will be discussed and the possible benefits and issues can be looked at. By doing this, the project proposal can be devised to hopefully benefit and improve the community. It is important to look at ways to extend and develop communities to ensure that it is providing the people within in it, in the most effective way. Community As mentioned by Wheatley and Kellner-Rogers (1998, cited in Parse, 2003,p.5) the definition of community is a collection of people inhabiting the same place or sharing something in common. The community that a child grows up in can have an impact on their development and communities’ help to create the environments that children need to thrive and succeed. In communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. A very important aspect of a community is the economic activity. 36% of the neighbourhood are in full-time employment, followed by 18% being self-employed, 16% retired and 16% in part-time employment. The occupations of the people in employment, 19.4% having professional occupations, 17.1% being managers, directors and senior officials, 13.8% as skilled trades occupations. The qualifications that members of the neighbourhood hold can help to reflect the wealth of the community. 34% of the community have a degree or higher, 15% have 5 or more GCSEs grade A – C. However, 19% hold no formal qualifications. In 2007-2008 the average weekly total household income for the area was estimated to be £950, compared to the South East region which has an average weekly income of £800. This totals to an extra £7, 200 a year.
