An interesting fact about imperialism is that France and Great Britain were the biggest factor, which they targeted small countries in Africa and stole most of their natural resources during the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Imperialism is a policy of spreading a country's power and influence through military force and other ways. Imperialism makes big powerful countries gain money and resources by taking other smaller and weaker countries resources. The imperialists utilize the residences of the small countries for personal benefits such as for cheap labor. Imperialism is wrong and should never be okay, it is similar to stealing and using. The natives in the colonies get strongly affected because he stronger countries want them to think differently. An example of Imperialism is in The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, this relates because the earthlings can be represented as imperialists because they come to Mars. The earthlings think they are helping the Martians but they actually aren’t which can relate to actual imperialism. Also in this book the Martians catch chicken poxs, which was very similar to when the British landed in America and gave the Native Americans diseases from their blankets. They just want to help the Martians but they really could have just done well on their own. Another passage is Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell; the narrator makes the elephant represent imperialists. The natives would abuse the officer because he was European and they made Burma a colony, the officer can represent the country itself and the civilians abusing him can represent the countries opinion towards imperialism. The office than sees a elephant which can represent the imperialists, running around the village and destroying everything. He then shoots down the elephant, which he was struggling on making a decision for, but the people were chanting for him too. He then killed the elephant and by the next the villagers took everything from the elephant besides the bones. This can relate to how the imperialists “run” around and destroy everything and the people just want it gone, and once its gone they take everything. The narrator says “for a mad elephant has to be killed, like a mad dog, if its owner fails to control it”, which can mean when the imperialists
