In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell uses imagery to anticipate dangers to come. He incorporates sounds and elements to further escalate the suspense of the book. Connell uses this to have an effect on the reader in a way that will show the purpose of his writing. The effect he has on readers is to make them have a sense of eagerness to see what happens in this exciting thriller. This correlates to danger because Rainsford knows that the sound concerned his safety because it was a sound of a pistol. Also, the situation that Rainsford has with Ivan when they first meet was to escalate the suspense of the reading. The passage says “The menacing look in the eyes did not change. The revolver pointed as rigidly as if the giant were a statue. He gave no sign that he understood Rainsford’s words, or that he had ever heard them”(43). Ivan’s lack of sound further intensify the mood of suspense. The suspense of this reading is based on sounds and lack of sounds that Connell contributes to it. Connell also personifies the elements to create a hostile environment. One believes that he uses description to make dangerous situations not so hostile. This meaning that he uses elements to minimize the danger to come. Such as “The cry was pinched off short as the blood- warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head”(42).
