Imagery and Symbolism of Márquez Gabriel García Márquez, a Colombian author who specializes upon story themes exchanging realistic events with elements of the impossible, magical realism. In the circumstances and environment in which he was raised, his influences derived upon tales of a superstitious reality, stories involving unexplainable elements. Márquez, born in the late 1920s, eldest of twelve children, developed under the care of his maternal grandparents. As a child, his grandmother provided him with the knowledge and exposed him the the world of magical realism in stories with her stylistic, straightforward spoken word. Big Mama’s Funeral, tells of a story of a woman who has incredible influence upon her people, and of importance for the Pope to President was in attendance. The story consists of the theme of politics, Big Mama, the main character is known as an seemingly immortal structure in charge of Macondo, the setting of the story. She symbolize the unknown super power than society follows without questioning the cause, listening to a greater being due to the lack of knowledge. The citizens of her country are influenced by her, in indirect dictatorship. What shapes the theme of magical realism in the story is the belief of the citizens, and the frequent mentions of immortality. The topics discussed inside of his tale is parallel to how the world he lived in, Colombia. During the time his piece was written, the symbolism of Big Mama as the head figure of the nation represents, what is translated in reality as the upper classes status above the poor, and how the poor views the upper class, “Rarefied by a century of abstract legislation, amid oil painting of National Heroes and busts of Greek thinkers, the vocation of Big Mama reached unheard-of proportions”.
