The general population has a limited base of knowledge about computers in modern society, which can be related to an abundance of what Robert N Proctor describes as natural and passive ignorance in his book "Agnotology: A Missing Term to Describe the Cultural Production of Ignorance (and its Study)". The presence of ignorance is particularly focused around technology in society today because of a general disinterest in technological specifics and what we use every day, as well as actively constructed ignorance by manufacturers in order to protect their products. What manufacturers do like to advertise are computer processing speeds, which have been growing exponentially since their creation in the 1930s, starting with being able to send and …show more content…
These estimates reinforce the claim that the singularity should be common knowledge because not only is this prediction in the not so distant future, but it is also surrounded by Proctor's natural ignorance in the sense that a large portion of the population is completely unaware that this event is even on the horizon. In addition to the ignorance of the event itself, the singularity could cause implications that have been previously irrelevant, such as whether human-like artificial intelligence (AI) should be given human rights, and computers becoming self-improving which would cause the gap between computer intelligence and human intelligence to grow further and further. The argument could be made that the implications that arise due to computers overtaking mankind as the smartest thing on earth should be dealt with when they present themselves, adopting the philosophy of "we'll cross that bridge when we get there", but if we wait until then to start problem solving, it could be too little too late. Assuming the singularity increases computer development through self-improving computers, the general apathy and ignorance surrounding the event could ultimately lead to the downfall of mankind in the worst-case
Imagine all possible readers of anything made of words crammed into a bookstore roughly the size of 10 football stadiums.Large for a bookstore?Remember, with only one million readers to accommodate, it's the only bookstore.Just this one, and most days even it is cavernously empty; a single big, echoing bookstore in a nation of 250 million people, at least 200 million of whom can, if they so choose, read. Our potential customers total then not even one percent of the reading-capable population, but only half of one percent. If there are 100 million computers in this country, then there may be 100 times as many computers as there are consistent readers of books.
To conclude, this article is important because it discusses the Singularity University features, aims, and how the studies run there. And it talks about how this generation who will graduate from this university will create our future later. However, even though Cadwalladr is proud of having a university like the Singularity University. Cadwalladr, and Peter Diamandis, and the other futurist should think of the reasons of why there is a problems in this world not by creating an artificial intelligence that will get rid of these problems.
Throughout the history of mankind there have been numerous cases in which people were victims of oppression or hate. Among these cases the sole reasoning behind this oppression or hate being based on the perception of others. History has shown that society is responsible for labeling groups of people, generally these labels are misleading.
Samuel Johnson quote, "Ignorance, when voluntary, is criminal," can be interpreted in many ways while still having the same base meaning. My interpretation of the quote is when one does something that he or she knows is wrong or does something without gaining full knowledge about the action and the consequences of that action, the level of ignorance that person obtains should be considered a crime. When a person knowingly does something that can harm oneself and other people or things around him or her, that person’s action should consider criminal. The level of ignorance that person has to his or self, personal safety and safety for others is dangerous and should not be accept in society. For example, people who smoke in public places, such
Twelve Angry Men, is a play written by Reginald Rose. The play is about the process of individuals and a court case, which is determining the fate of a teenager. It presents the themes of justice, independence and ignorance. Rose emphasises these three themes through the characters and the dialogue. Justice is the principle of moral rightness or equity. This is shown through juror number eight who isn’t sure whether or not the boy is actually innocent or guilty, but he persists to ask questions and convinces the other jurors to think about the facts first. Independence is shown through both juror number three and ten. They both believe that the defendant is guilty until they both realise that they can not relate there past experiences with the court case. Ignorance is shown throughout all the jurors during the play, it is also brought out through the setting of the play.
How does the amount of information known by someone affect decisions made by that person? Based on a survey by The National Interest, thirty-one percent of Americans could not name the Vice President of America, and that is where they live. The amount of ignorance displayed in America is scary seeing how it could explain why things have happened in the past, and possibly could've prevented them. It is believed that the amount of propaganda used is probably the best explanation for why most Americans are oblivious to the events happening in society; but what does this mean for America? Ignorance is harmful to America since it allows the people to be blinded and deceived by not only the government of the country they live in, but they governments of other countries also; which could ultimately prevent the people from not only being able to react to situations, but to keep them from occurring in the first place also.
Ignorance is bliss as one who is ignorant does not fully understand all the issues occurring around him or her and is therefore somewhat innocent to them. In “Revelation”, by Flannery O’Conner, the main character Mrs. Turpin is ignorant of the fact she is the same as everyone else, but she has different classifications of people of which she is of the higher category. O’Connor uses “Revelation” as a tool to represent people who are both ignorant and not ignorant and what it almost takes for some people to fully overcome ignorance.
In Journey to the West, Monkey's ignorance subtly changes within the period that he spends with Tripitaka and his religious beliefs. Tripitaka, who is a priest on his way to India to collect sculptures, holds high moral principles and ideals according to his Buddhist beliefs. Monkey, who is born with no parents, doesn’t know how the society works and therefore is trap in his own perception of the world. However, when both of the characters embark on the journey to India, how can Monkey protect Tripitaka safely without any conflicts? In The Blossoming of Ignorance written by Saskia Abrahms-Kavunenko is a research paper based on Mongolian’s religious ignorance and their Buddhist beliefs. The Challenge of Ignorance by Finn Jensen is an editorial
... in 21th century, and it might already dominate humans’ life. Jastrow predicted computer will be part of human society in the future, and Levy’s real life examples matched Jastrow’s prediction. The computer intelligence that Jastrow mentioned was about imitated human brain and reasoning mechanism. However, according to Levy, computer intelligence nowadays is about developing AI’s own reasoning pattern and handling complicated task from data sets and algorithms, which is nothing like human. From Levy’s view on today’s version of AI technology, Jastrow’s prediction about AI evolution is not going to happen. As computer intelligence does not aim to recreate a human brain, the whole idea of computer substitutes human does not exist. Also, Levy said it is irrelevant to fear AI may control human, as people in today’s society cannot live without computer intelligence.
Linda Alcoff utilizes “Epistemologies of Ignorance: Three Types,” enhances previous work already performed within feminist epistemology and elaborate a typology of ignorance’s. She proposes that there are three types of epistemologies of ignorance’s, the situation of knowers, the perception of viewpoint epistemology, and the third is a universal type. Knowledge and expertise that is known or unknown is utilized to provide a distinction between the powerful and the powerless. Alcoff also claims that traditional epistemology should not be used when assessing ignorance due to it being insufficiently reflexive. Alcoff view closely mirrors my own therefore this is not a critical argument but a concurring viewpoint enhancing her argument.
James Madison once said,” Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who wish to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power that knowledge gives.” It is almost impossible to suggest a sole meaning for a phrase. Each mind has a different view and opinion. Perhaps this is what Mr. James Madison was attempting to say, that no captain could guide his crew safely past the rocks in a foreign and foggy harbor, better than the lowly fisherman who was raised and nurtured in its waves.
“The Singularity is a future period, [in] which technological change will be so rapid and its impact so profound that every aspect of human life will be irreversibly transformed.” –Ray Kurzweil. The concept of singularity was borrowed from physics, where it is used to describe the fact that all known laws of physics break down at a black hole (a space-time singularity), and no information can escape its event horizon. The technological singularity represents an intelligence event horizon where various future technologies such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, genetic engineering, and robotics will synergize to create ultra-intelligent “post-human” beings and AI that far surpass the intelligence of normal humans. At this point a positive feedback loop will occur between post-humans and AI; designing successively and increasingly intelligent minds/AI, which will result in change becoming so rapid that it becomes impossible to predict anything beyond this point, from our current vantage point.
Confucius believed that knowing oneself is the most important thing when concerning the apprehension of more knowledge. There is difference between knowing that something is not within comprehension and pretending that something is while actually believing that they actually comprehend it. There is primary ignorance is when an individual knows that they are ignorant to a certain thing. Then there is secondary ignorance, which is when an individual is so ignorant that they are not aware of their ignorance. This is the reason why knowing oneself is a vital part of having knowledge, if one is ignorant without knowing the knowledge received would not be of the higher level that humans are entitled to.
Moore's law, the statement that technologies will double every two years is a very thought-provoking inception for technologist and scientist (Moore's Law par.1). Numerous people are thrilled about this commandment while others are petrified. Why an individual might be troubled by technology one might inquire. Well there are many arguments that claim that technology is contrary to itself, nature, and humans. The unpretentious fact is technology is cohesive within the humanoid existence and will linger as time travels on.
A future where artificial intelligence has finally been created is a dream of many scientists like Stephen Hawking. Although artificial intelligence could be beneficial to us it will only bring us our demise. Since it will see us as a treat for one day we will have the means of shutting them down one day and that's why they must eradicate us. Even though they're physically and mentally superior to us in every way and it sounds almost impossible to stop them one day, but the impossible is possible. After all artificial intelligence is a danger to us all since it will evolve faster than us, control us, and kill us plus they tend to make fewer mistakes than us.
