While the skills gained during my master's study have enabled me to function as a research fellow at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), I find myself seeking to enhance them and gain more knowledge. My attendance at professional conferences, registration in short courses, and seeking mentorship can attest to this fact. Also, my desire to carry out innovative and independent research have become reinforced. Thus, in my quest for continued academic and professional excellence, I deem it necessary to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Epidemiology with a concentration in Pharmacoepidemiology and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) will be the perfect academic environment in which to do so. The opportunity to work …show more content…

My aspiration is to be a well-trained epidemiologist with valuable skills that can be effectively executed for the well-being of human lives. I envision myself being able to apply population-based sciences and methods as they relate, not only to vision and vision disorders, but to the general health status of humans; possessing the ability to conduct novel epidemiological studies, and implementing sophisticated statistical methods in data analysis of research studies. I'm aware that preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostic medical products are impacting human lives worldwide. Therefore, I hope to function as a leader in a health organization, using research to determine the risk-benefit profile of medical products across a broad range of health conditions; evaluating the clinical use of medical products and its emerging challenges; raising public awareness of the beneficial and adverse effects of drug therapy in human populations; and much more. Also, as I reflect on the power of mentorship, I would love to devote myself and use my expert knowledge to help others develop and succeed in their careers. Hence, in addition to my academic qualifications, a PhD in epidemiology will make me better equipped in achieving these …show more content…

Worthy of note is my collaboration with Dr. David Graham et al to study the risk of stroke, bleeding, and mortality in elderly Medicare beneficiaries with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation treated with novel oral anticoagulants or warfarin. My role, as with other team members, is in developing the study protocol, including the statistical analysis plan which applies a marginal structural modeling approach via inverse probability of treatment weighting based on the propensity score. Also, in interpreting the statistical results, identifying relevant literature, and contributing to the synthesis of the study data into a publishable scientific paper. This has been an enlightening experience and a monumental opportunity to be a part of such a feat that has the potential of affecting lives positively. Currently, I am conducting an observational study evaluating the utilization of drug products with Pregnancy Exposure Registries in the Sentinel Distributed Database. The study is aimed at assessing the differential utilization of these drug products with safety concerns in pregnant versus non-pregnant women, in pregnant women versus their pre-pregnancy state, and in pregnancy by trimester, using descriptive statistics so as to inform their avoidance rate in pregnant women. Although not published yet, I'm in the
