“The eighth named storm, third major hurricane, and the first major hurricane of 2017.” Hurricane Harvey has been the first major hurricane to hit land in the united states since 2005. This tropical storm is listed as the “wettest cyclone” in the United States. Resulting in at least 66 deaths and costing roughly 190 billion dollars, according to FEMA director Brock Long. Beginning on August 13th, the National Hurricane Center started watching a wave on the African Coast, on August 17th thunderstorms began and showed multiple signs of a hurricane. Starting in the Caribbean and traveling all the way to the United States. Throughout the state of Texas up to 300,000 people were left without electricity and with great property damage. On the other hand, Governor Greg Abbott told them if he were living there, he would go north. People in other states are wondering why some Houstonians didn’t get out of there and why were some officials skeptical about telling citizens to evacuate. If you recall in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and just weeks after a stronger hurricane started to make its way to Houston. Houstonians didn’t want to go through the same disaster that New Orleans experienced so they decided to leave which resulted in the largest evacuation in the U.S. Almost 4 million people left and because of the extremely high number of citizens trying to all leave at the same time, dozens of people died on the road, there was a huge bus fire. News later reported that the death toll from the actual storm was less than 10 and when people returned back to Houston they found their homes barely damaged. The Mayor of Texas thought Hurricane Harvey was going to be a repeat of the hurricane I previously mentioned, so he didn’t see the need to order an evacuation.
