Perception and attribution are both contributing factors to perceptual biases. The resulting stereotypes create generalizations about individuals that may or may not be true. There are different groups that an individual can be generalized under, such as race, gender and sexual orientation. “Once outside a familiar cultural context, people interpret what you say and do in different and unexpected ways” (Nahavandi, Denhardt, Denhardt, Aristigueta, 2015, p. 116). Depending on your interactions within or outside a familiar context, a person can be judged in ways that may be unfair. Among them are the perceptions of him being unfriendly, uptight, not being open, and too serious. These are some of the preconceived stereotypes of Asian individuals. “Stereo types are so powerful that they can prevent us from recognizing individual differences and performance” (Nahavandi, Denhardt, Denhardt, Aristigueta, 2015, p. 127). Cultural stereotypes may have prevented the interviewers from learning all they could about Hun Lee. He may have been perceived as too uptight and unfriendly based on a preconceived stereotype of Asian individuals, causing the interviewer to stop paying attention and from learning more about Hun Lee. There were several attributional processes may be operating. Internal attribution are more difficult to discern. Hun Lee was difficult to read as his answers were too straightforward and did not give the interviewer a clear picture of his talents and abilities. External attributions are easier to determine. Hun Lee was well prepared for the interview and provided the facts to answer the questions, but did not provide additional information.
