How work has changed through the years and the benefits of it With the passing of years, society starts to change and people start to create new behaviors depending on different factors. Factors like the environment and technology that are integrated in our daily lives bring a lot of changes also in our work life. Work has taken completely a different path compared to the work of 40 years ago. Then most of the workers were men and the work was mainly physical labor. No such thing as etiquette in the staff existed so workers could even smoke in their workplaces. Most importantly work had fixed hours usually a nine-to-five workday starting from Monday till Friday. The work has had fundamental changes since technology started to interact in different aspects of our lives and work. ``Where once hardly anyone used a computer in the workplace, the majority of people are engaging with computers or some form of information communication technology that's really transforming the way we communicate'' (Spoehr 2) Work has always been defined in the past as a synonym of labor work however with the advances in technology nowadays workers are more likely to stay in front of a computer and do their work perfectly well. Technology has changed the way people interact with work starting from the improve in the communication which has brought a complete revolution in the distance businesses. Workers can connect with each other from different parts of the world and everyone is able to share information or work on a project. Even though everyone had a fixed workplace nowadays everyone can work from their homes and still have control in their jobs. There are several issues that were both discussed in the book End This Depression Now by Paul Krugman and Changing Contours of Work: Jobs and opportunities in the New Economy by Stephen Sweet and Peter Meiksins. The textbook offered a sociological analysis of the nature of work in the new economy, such as the new opportunities in this economy as well and the challenges many workers now face and ultimately how this change the family lives of many. The book also discussed about the new face of the workplace and work in general, which includes issues on inequality and discrimination. The book discussed job security, policies and why workers work more now than they did before or work in 24/7 economy. Lastly, the book talks about the ways on how to face all the challenges in this new economy and work environment.
As for the working class, the women often had to get jobs in case their husbands got ill or died. They had to make an income to be able to take care of their family. It was normal to work 14 hours a day in for example a textile factory. If a woman was pregnant, she had to work until they day she gave birth, and then return as soon as possible. The wages in general were low, but women earned a lot less than men.
In the case of domestic servants and factory workers, the women working as the former were not better off than the women working as the latter. It was believed that domestic servants enjoyed better working conditions since it was strongly believed that housework could not be bad compared to having to work with dangerous machinery in the factories. Although industries require at least a hundred workers to work the machineries, most domestic servants served middle-class urban families whose income can only pay one servant. Not only did the work pile up for one servant, but also these women were also required to work for eighteen hours every day compared to factory women.
