Thunderstorm Asthma
Thunderstorm Asthma, a storm so deadly that it's consider something like a terrorist attack. These thunderstorms are rare storms that are caused by a sudden change of weather conditions. The storm picks up different pollens and other allergens and drops them back down with the rain. This causes people with asthma to have asthma attacks and unable to breath. How are these storms started and what can be done to help people with asthma during these storms. What can be done to treat this in the most effective possible way. Where do these storms occur and why they occur in nature.
During a thunderstorm, grass, tree, and weed pollens, as well as mold spores, are lifted into the air. Moisture from storms then causes these pollens to rupture into tiny particles that are then small enough to enter the lungs. When broken open, each pollen grain

Anyone with asthma who has allergy symptoms in spring including hay fever, or worsened asthma symptoms should use a regular preventer inhaler, even if they feel well. These inhalers are designed to reduce the inflammation in the lungs over a period of time, and prevent an asthma attack occurring.In the event of a thunderstorm asthma attack, treatment will be the same as any other acute asthma attack, which usually involves the administration of inhaled mediation to dilate the airways, plus an anti-inflammatory medication. Those who suffer from asthma should also carry an inhaler at all times. Do not wait to see if symptoms go away on their own. Inhalers deliver medication quickly and directly to inflamed and congested airways. If people know they have allergies and suffer from allergic rhinitis during the pollen season, then they should ensure that this is also well-managed by taking antihistamines or nasal steroid sprays. Asthma is a disorder that interferes with the lungs and the airways to the lungs. It causes attacks of wheezing and difficult breathing. An asthma attack occurs when the airways respond to some kind of trigger, Some examples of triggers for Asthma attacks are dust, mold, pets, exercise, cold weather, and some attacks start for no known reason. The triggers may irritate the airways to the lungs, allowing disease-fighting cells to build up and causing the lungs to swell up. In addition, the airways could get blocked when the muscles surrounding the lungs tighten. This keeps air from circulating freely in the lungs. Or, mucus may clog and narrow the airways in the lungs, making breathing even more difficult.
As modern medical research begins to discover the deep-rooted genetic and environmental origins of many chronic diseases and illnesses, researchers have began to realize the complexity of illnesses that plague mankind. One prevalent disease among humans is Asthma, a chronic lung disease that irritates and tightens the airways, resulting in reocurring periods of coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Asthma’s phenotypic range does not follow the relative simplicity of Mendelian genetics, but is rather rooted in multiple genes, such as Interleukin-13 (IL-13), and specific environmental exposures such as air pollution.
Tornadoes are powerful and destructive phenomena created in strong thunderstorms. Tornadoes are most common in the United States, and in the U.S., they are common in an area called Tornado Alley. Every year, tornadoes wreak havoc on the countryside, towns, and even cities. The deadliest tornado in U.S. history crossed over three states, destroyed 15,000 homes, and killed almost 700 people. There are only a couple of people on record that claim to have been in and seen the center of a tornado and lived. Asthma is chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways characterized by recurring episodes of wheeling and breathlessness. It often exists with allergies and can be worsened through exposure to allergens. In fact, asthma is complicated syndromes that have neither single definition nor complete explanation to the point. In light of its treatment, it is worthwhile to notice that asthma cannot be cured, instead can be only managed by avoiding exposure to allergens and/or by using medications regularly.
Asthma is treated with two types of medicines: long-term control and quick-relief medicines. Long-term control medicines help reduce airway inflammation and prevent asthma symptoms. Quick-relief, or "rescue," medicines relieve asthma symptoms that may flare up.
Goals of treatment include interventions to help maintain good lung function (U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Asthma is treated with long-term control and quick relief medications (U. S. Department of Health and human Services, 2014). The severity of symptoms will dictate a medical treatment plan. As advanced practice nurses, we need to help asthma patients identify their triggers. This aspect is individualized based on the recognition of symptoms that lead to exacerbations. A few of common triggers include smoke, weather, pollen, and food. Additionally, we need to provide them with education related to their disease process.
Asthma is a respiratory disorder marked by breathing difficulty caused by temporary narrowing of the bronchi, the airways branching from the trachea to the lungs. Attacks usually are brought on by allergic reaction to ANTIGENS such as grass and tree pollens, mold spores, fungi, animal dander, and certain foods but may also be caused by chemical irritants in the atmosphere or by infections of the respiratory tract. Susceptibility to an asthma attack is based on hyperactivity of the bronchial muscles, which constrict on exposure to one or another of these agents. Episodes of asthma vary widely in severity and may last from a few minutes to several days.
Asthma is a disease that currently has no cure and can only be controlled and managed through different treatment methods. If asthma is treated well it can prevent the flare up of symptoms such as coughing, diminish the dependence on quick relief medication, and help to minimize asthma attacks. One of the key factors to successful treatment of asthma is the creation of an asthma action plan with the help of a doctor that outlines medications and other tasks to help control the patient’s asthma ("How Is Asthma Treated and Controlled?"). The amount of treatment changes based on the severity of the asthma when it is first diagnosed and may be the dosage may be increased or decreased depending on how under control the patient’s asthma is. One of the main ways that asthma can be controlled is by becoming aware of the things that trigger attacks. For instance staying away from allergens such as pollen, animal fur, and air pollution can help minimize and manage the symptoms associated with asthma. Also if it is not possible to avoid the allergens that cause a patient’s asthma to flare up, they may need to see an allergist. These health professionals can help diagnosis what may need to be done in other forms of treatment such as allergy shots that can help decrease the severity of the asthma ("How Is Asthma Treated and Controlled?").
One of the most dangerous, hazardous storms in the world is a blizzard. Blizzards usually occur during the winter and usually come during the cold days. Blizzards occur when the temperature is low and winds are above 50 miles per hour. They affect us by meaning humans and animals by decreasing its visibility, and dumping inches, maybe even a few feet of snow on us. During blizzards, it’s best to stay in shelter and not drive or walk on the streets because you may get frostbites. There are 2 types of blizzards; ground blizzard, and severe blizzard. A sever blizzard is when temperatures are lower than 10 degrees Fahrenheit, the visibility is low, and winds are high. During times when blizzards occur the United States have lost many lives. Coughing, sneezing, runny noses allergies are not a fun thing for a person to have. Many people have allergies, but not a lot of people truly know what an allergy is and how they work. Allergies are a reaction from the body caused by certain substances. These reactions can trigger symptoms that come in different levels of severity. No matter age, body type, or gender anybody can have an allergy. “As many as 30% of U.S. adults and 40% of children”(“What Is an Allergic Reaction?”) have allergies. I fortunately don’t have any medical conditions, but I do have allergies and have always wondered what they really were.
As a conclusion, every thunderstorm is dangerous as it has several threats that are vulnerable to living things and properties. The threats could be from lightning, flash floods, strong winds and hails that bring damages to properties but also bring harm to living things such as human, animal and vegetation. However, there are many ways to minimize risks if we have take preparedness and safety checklist before, after and during thunderstorm
Thunderstorms (TS) are severe weather phenomenon, which develop mainly due to intense convection. These are meso-scale localized atmospheric convective processes associated with heavy rainfall, lightening and thunders, hails and squall lines. The thunderstorms are characterized with stormy winds (60-150 km/hour) and sometimes become more severe and turns into tornadoes. Thunderstorms occur almost everywhere in the world due to atmospheric instability associated with convection and strong moisture convergence. It is one of the most spectacular atmospheric phenomena that affect the lives of the people. It is estimated that at any given instant more than 2000 thunderstorms are taking place around the world (WMO, 1953).
