When it comes to raising children, there are several of ways to lean towards. Depending on one’s background or how they were raised determines how they will raise their children. It takes skills, determination, and a strong mind to bring a child up into this world well disciplined. African Americans and White Americans are two subcultures that has a different way of raising their children, and neither of them are the wrong or right way.
Within an African American home, parenting may be approached differently depending on who lives in the home. Most African American children are likely to live and be raised by a single parent, typically the mother. Black Parents are very big on teaching their children the value of respect and responsibilities, while white parents are not. Most black parents discipline their kids to be quiet and polite while they are out in public. Black children are typically raised this way so that when they grow up they will be seen as well-mannered people and not treated any less then the next person (King). White parents are not big on teaching their kids how to be respectful and well-mannered in public places, they are free to roam and act however they feel. White children have a lot of freedom to explore the world without being bothered by their parents (......), specifically a white child can run off in a any store to pick up something that caught his or her eye and neither the mother nor father will mumble a word, but with black parents the child will be firmly told to come back and not to run off. Black parents are normally so strict on their children because it helps shape them to become more civilized and well taught people. There are four discipline styles that parents usually evolve around, they are authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. African Americans are the ones to be the authoritarian parent, which means that they are very controlling with little warmth. Taking charge and laying down set rules is the way that they control what is wrong and right for their children. When black children become adolescences they start experiencing and adapting to things in the real world. Children behavior starts to change and discipline becomes a problem, because they are developing to the world that is outside of their home (Adkison-Johnson). Being strict on children shape those in the end to be well disciplined and helps them with handling the stereotypes that black people are placed in.
