America has overcome good and bad, ever since we got our independence. Several large events changed how we view the past and never want to visit those scenarios ever again. World War II changed lives throughout the world, especially the lives of Americans by Japan sneak attacking Pearl Harbor, Americans dropping bombs on Japan, and the US economy plummeting. We will never want to revisit these events, but they will always be remembered. First, Pearl Harbor is a day to remember for us as Americans today; but in the past, Americans used the remembrance of Pearl Harbor to pump them up and want to defeat the Japanese. The Americans wanted to defeat Japan, so badly since their attacks on Pearl Harbor occurred even before war was declared. “Pearl Harbor was a huge success for the Japanese, but the ‘sneak’ attack made Americans determined for revenge”(Granton). The attacks happened early in the Japan killed millions in World War II we killed under 100,000 in the dropping of the bombs. “More than 46 million people died in World War II. The Japanese, alone, may have killed 17 million. So why have so many focused so intently on the 80,000 who died at Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945?”(Benson). Atomic bombs destroyed parts of Japan and took out the population of cities; however, the Japanese took the lives of enough people to fill to the population of South Dakota; 17 times. Third, during the war the US economy plummeted as we were still recovering from the great depression. We didn’t have much time since the great depression to the war. The unemployment rate since the great depression was low, but the war started to change that. “The United States was still recovering from the impact of the Great Depression and the unemployment rate was hovering around 25%”(Impact...KLRU). A lot of men were sent off to war so there jobs were not getting done and someone had to get them
After the end of World War II, the United States went through many changes. Most of the changes were for the better, but some had an adverse effect on certain population centers. Many programs, agencies and policies were created to transform American society and government.
The attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7th, 1941, was and still is an event that will forever be deep-rooted in the minds of every American. After the tragic surprise attack on American soil by the Japanese, Americans throughout the country were looking for a sense of unity. The President at the time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, recited a moving and powerful speech the day after the attack. Although the speech was specifically targeted at the Members of Congress in an effort to persuade the declaration of war with Japan, the speech was also written to be televised to the entire country. When the attack comes to mind, the powerful speech that mustered the nation together slowly follows.
The United States of America has experienced many tragic events in its history. The attack on pearl harbor and the terrorist attack on September 1, 2001 happen to be the most significant. These both tragic events affected the lives of many. These both events had a quite both different and same presidential response. These historical events changed the way people would live in everyday life for a while. Both of these tragedies made history and will never be forgotten and all of those innocent lives that were taken away on December 7th, 1941 and September 11, 2001.
Prior and during the war, the Japanese were known for their citizens’ extreme loyalty and commitment to their nation, but after the dropping of the atomic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, some of these feelings diminished within the Japanese nation. Prior to the dropping of the atomic bomb, over 70% of people in Japan believed that their nation could come out on top in the war even after more than a decade of constant fighting and the Japanese being on the defensive for over three years since the Battle of Midway. Directly after the use of the atomic bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the percentage of Japanese people that believed that defeat was inevitable rose to over 50%. Many people in the two cities that were bombed by the United States were affected more so than the rest of the Japanese population. For example, a 25% increase in suicidal thoughts was reported in the two cities struck by America’s new deadly weapon.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave this speech to the U.S. Congress on December 8, 1941. Many criticized the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but the decision to attack America was wisely made. The Americans were going to enter the war sooner or later, and on the allies’ side.
Angelina Jolie said, “Without pain, there would be no suffering, without suffering we would never learn from our mistakes. To make it right, pain and suffering is the key to windows, without it, there is no way of life.” On August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a small city whose death toll rises to 90,000-166,000. On August 9th, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, 60,000–80,000. In total, 15 million people lost their lives during the duration of the Second World War.
Basically the article suggests life was rough. But that all changed when we decided to participate in the war. In Steven Horwitz and Michael J. McPhillips’ article, “ The reality of Wartime Economy”, they note that many people want to believe that war was the reason we got out of the Great Depression because it has many favorable outcomes. They also point out that the economy was also revived by the aid of the government, but only because World War II was a catalyst (3). Industries got back into shape to spew out war materials. As if in unison, the whole country acted to aid in this war. Due to the demand of war supplies, millions of jobs opened up in factories. Horwitz and McPhillips’ article agrees when statistics were compared from before the war, and during the war. The statistics showed that 17% of Americans were unemployed before and during the war almost zero percentage of the american work force unemployed (4). The war was enough stimulation to the economy to get its gears started. Since almost everyone was employed during the World War, they were able to accumulate a large amount of sum. The earned money from the citizens accumulated so much that many families were able to move away from the cities and live in the suburbs. Everyone had money to spend and new consumer
America’s entry into World War II had an importance to America after the war. The United States involvement in the war was long and took a toll on everyone in the war. The military of the U.S. was the deciding factor in World War II. The United States grew militarily and economically because of the war. Finally stopping the Great Depression and bringing on jobs for everyone including women, colored people and the fighters of the war.
The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and this action made Americans fear and despise them. There were Japanese American immigrants living in the United States near the area of Washington. They were betrayed, they had to stay in camp in fear and anguish. All the suffering that Japanese Americans have to face shows that America is not a paradise, America can make people feel so bad, though there is hope for a good life in people.

Many of them saved a lot of their money because they knew that they would probably lose their job after the war. Then, when Congress decided to cut tax rates in 1945, Americans had much more money to spend and they felt confident in starting new businesses, which led to a very low unemployment rate after the war and the end of the Great Depression.
America molded its self to fit the situation needed for the people. And these events shaped the nation to they proud country it is today. The Great Depression taught America to be hopeful; World War 2 taught it to unite and the Cold War taught it to be tough. These three things brought us into the new millennium with ne technologies, new threats and new way of life.
The Attack on Pearl Harbor was a shocking blow to the United States that forced the U.S. into World War II. The United States goal was to stay isolated from foreign affairs, but Pearl Harbor changed all that, forcing them to get involved in foreign affairs. A young, power hungry United States wanted to control Southeast Asia, angering Japan along the way. The reason the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor was the results of decades of tension starting back in 1899 with arguments over the United States Open Door Policy; both countries desired control over the Pacific and East Asia, which made war unavoidable.
Before the attacks, Hiroshima had a population of 255,000 people and Nagasaki was home to 195,000 people. When these cities were attacked, 70,000 out of those 255,000 died in Hiroshima and 42,000 out of 195,000 perished in Nagasaki. This means that the bombings whipped out 27% of Hiroshima and 22% of the Nagasaki population (Total Casualties). Continuing on, the bombing of Japan was also unnecessary due to the unacceptable terms of the Potsdam Declaration. After Germany’s surrender on May 7, 1945, the U.S. created a treaty, called the Potsdam Declaration, with terms of surrender for Japan (Lawton).
After World War II America was well out of the depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt ended segregation in the armed forces, and this gave many different races great new benefits. Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941 at approximately 7:55 am by the Japanese. The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed President Roosevelt spoke the words, “ a date which will live in infamy” he was discussing the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed. Around the world during this time, people were taking in the impacts of WWll. Japan also allied with Italy and Germany, all three countries were greedy for expansion, but Japan wanted oil as well, and the American Naval fleet was in the way. Japan attacked Pearl harbor because they felt that the Americans were standing in the way of their treasures and world expansion.
