This process is accelerated with technology enabling us to communicate easier and to more people than ever before. Today, the advent of new technologies has changed the way we use our language to talk to others. We are now able to communicate electronically via text which changes the way we use written language. Since the 1930’s until now, studies show that about 64% of kids and teens have been using slang terms in their school work. It is amazing what some of them are. Slang is used all of the time by almost all people and has changed a lot over the past decades. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a child’s perspective to show how slang has changed from the 1930’s until today.

Whatever one’s perspective on slang, it is a natural and inevitable part of language. In this paper I will discuss examples of current slang being used that some people may not understand.
Slang is the everyday common language, generally used by young adults and children, although it is not exclusive. Slang is known to be very informal and usually inappropriate. Today adolescents know more slang words than they do SAT words. According to Valerie Strauss, author of "More and More, Kids Say the Foulest Things," teachers have noticed the rise of this common language in hallways, classrooms, and playgrounds. They believe this is causing the decline of youth's English language skills and leads to a general decline in youth's thoughts. Text messaging is damaging our literacy and communication skills as a society. Calling someone on the phone or writing them a letter is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. There is a new language that is being learned and not taught across the globe. It is the language of Textese, and it has quickly consumed the lives of millions across the world. There will always be the protector of language arts. These are the shrinking number of people everyone knows, that will continue to handwrite letters and sign them with proper English and etiquette. It may be as simple as picking up the phone and calling a friend or relative. It may be even simpler than that, in that people put forth an effort to talk to the person sitting next to or across from you and engage them in a conversation. Texting and textisms have become so common and widespread that using proper English, correct spelling, and full sentences is also becoming a thing of the past. People that constantly use text and instant messaging may have difficulty with literacy and expressing themselves in writing form. The research shows that text messaging has deteriorated how we communicate and express ourselves because textisms have become an easier and quicker form of communication that has affected literacy in children and adults.
