Prior to the arrival of the western ideas, Okonkwo was a well-respected member of the Umuofia clan. His traffic flaw, being terrified of looking weak like his father who was also a very lazy man that loved a life of leisure. This pushed the protagonist to become self-made man he was. He was idolized throughout the village he had what only some men dreamed of, three wives, land, titles and much more. When he was forced to leave Umuofia and take his family with him, after killing a clansman he no longer fells important to society he has no important role to fill.

Okonkwo is a cruel yet kind man who has everything yet has nothing, which in turn creates a sympathetic character. A character such as Okonkwo has many facets; or masks if you will. Okonkwo character in all fairness fails to show some real virtues of a true leader, but rather that of a ruler. Okonkwo character was introduced as a heroic and iconic leader that was glorified and patronized by his kinsmen. He took vengeance against anyone who dared go against his wishes and commands. He uses aggression to establish his rule and his action of defiance against the elders and the Gods shows his “king like” status that he so much enjoys.

He grew up hating his dad because his dad was a coward and he was weak his dad’s name was Unoka. Okonkwo didn’t grow up like any normal kid. His fame rested on solid personal achievements as a young man at the age of 18. Okonkwo’s culture is the igbo culture he doesn’t believe in any other culture he thinks that is the right culture and that there are many gods.
The novel, Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, reveals the dynamics of the Ibo tribe that eventually led to Okonkwo’s demise. Okonkwo was taught the values and ways of the tribe which prepared him for failure in a more modern society. The family structure that existed caused many struggles with his father and even his sons. Also, the Ibo tribe valued strength and status. Such ideals opened the door for conflict with the missionaries who are trying to enforce laws and civility. Altogether, Okonkwo was mislead and unwilling to learn another way of life. Although many things contributed to Okonkwo’s downfall, one must explore each reason separately in order to understand. In the novel Things Fall Apart the author, Chinua Achebe, set the novel in Nigeria with the participation of the Igbo People. The main character of the novel is Okonkwo, he was a very hard working man, who was respected by everyone in the villages. Unfortunately he gets to one point in his life where he did everything to not be seen as weak as his father. His father was a lazy man who never gained respect in the villages. He was always in debt and never paid it back. There was one time when someone called his father “agbala” that means “woman” and that's where Okonkwo started to work harder and do anything because he didn't want to be called woman. Okonkwo is a tragic hero because his flaw is the fear of being considered weak like his father.
Okonkwo had dreams, some of his dreams were fulfilled while others weren’t. Okonkwo's dreams were to be successful and better than his father which happened because he was one of the greatest, well known and respected men in the tribe of Umuofia. His other dream was for his son Nwoye to be just like him which didn’t happen since Nwoye was not happy with the way he was being treated and he went and joined the white men church in spite of his father.
Okonkwo is an interesting character that experiences many changes throughout the novel. He is a self made member of the Umuofia community unlike his father. His father’s cowardliness and laziness never provided for him or the rest of his family. Growing up, he developed a fear of becoming like his father and that is why it became his influence and purpose in life is to live successfully. This is one of the reasons he reaches troubling times along with his Chi. The concept of Chi plays a big role in his destiny and it was can be interpreted two ways after reading the book. It is possible that Chi may have caused his difficulties, but I believe that he caused them himself because of his strong-willed nature.
What drives people to kill themselves? There are many answers to this question, and in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, readers find an answer to it. Although many things lead up to Okonkwo’s suicide, his main motivations were the major changes and losses in his life which prompt him to contradict his own beliefs and kill himself. He made the decision to kill himself when he recognized that he no longer had a place to belong.
