Today in our society, the criminal justice system appears throughout mass media. Everyone can see crime by looking in magazines, newspapers, books, and watching television shows. The media in the past years has crossed a fine line between crime information and entertainment. This can be seen by shows like the People’s Court or Judge Judy. The amounts of criminal images that people come in contact with on a daily basis suggest or influence fear to people. From the late 1970’s where westerns were traded in for crime shows like Perry Mason and even today shows like COPS or Gangland. If though it is not a crime it is the amount of media coverage that was put on his protest. A study that was conducted in the 1980s than done again in the early 2000’s show those individuals who watch large amounts of television shows a higher rate of fear towards the environment versus those who watch less television. A mean worldview is developed from those images portrayed on television that are violent and are hazardous. Viewers are likely to worry about being shot, sexually assaulted, and even killed. Another factor that plays part is the in the fear of crime is the location in which the person lives, if that person lives in a highly induced crime area then the fear will be higher than the person not living in crime area. There are also other factors that plays into the fear that the media puts out, that would be experience, and example of that would be if a person came emotional connect to a television show because of a similar experience. Another factor would be demographics; researchers have found that the fear of crime and the media were high mostly come from whites, females, and the elderly.
