"All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (1.3.51) This chant uttered by the Third Witch changed Macbeth's life forever. Those words gave Macbeth the courage to take his destiny into his own hands and attempt to control fate. Is this the right decision? We as readers do not completely know; we as readers can only attempt to analyze Shakespeare's words and decipher why decisions were made as they were. Ultimately, Macbeth's actions resulted in his kingship. Macbeth taking matters into his own hands allowed him to achieve his goal of being king. This was Macbeth's ambition for a long time, even before meeting him in the play. After Ross and Angus ride in carrying the news that Duncan has proclaimed Macbeth as the Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth says aside to himself, "Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair/ And make my seated heart knock at my ribs/ Against the use of nature?" (1.3.148-150) Macbeth has just conceived a thought that makes him fearful of the future, however, according to the witches, Macbeth's future shows he as the King of Scotland. Why is he then fearful? This thought that Macbeth has just thought of is a plot to kill the man that just blessed him with this honor, King Duncan. This would give Macbeth a higher chance of fulfilling his own prophecy. The fact that Macbeth had been triggered to think this way shows that he desires the power that comes with being king.
