Prison conditions range from mild to severe and provide insight as to whether these conditions have an effect of recidivism on post-release inmates. In this paper, we look at the studies and results of three articles; “Prison Conditions and Recidivism” by Francesco Drago, Roberto Galbiati, and Pietro Vertova, “Do Harsher Prison Conditions Reduce Recidivism? A Discontinuity-based Approach” by M. Keith Chenand and Jesse M. Shapiro, and “Rehabilitating Rehabilitation: Prison Conditions and Recidivism” by Giovanni Mastrobuoni and Daniele Terlizzese. We look to see if the results found in their research support our hypothesis that harsh prison conditions lead to an increase in recidivism. For each article, we will be looking at the consistencies, …show more content…

This study looks at the behavior of former Italian inmates after their release to assess the effects of prison conditions on recidivism. Condition variations are based on how heavily overcrowded the prison is, the total number of deaths that occur during the inmate’s sentence, and the distance of the prison from the main town of the province where the prison is located. They came to three conclusions: harsher prison conditions do not reduce recidivism, the severity of overcrowding and the amount of deaths do not decrease recidivism, and the degree of isolation increases …show more content…

A Discontinuity-based Approach” by M. Keith Chenand and Jesse M. Shapiro. In this article, researchers estimate the effects of prison conditions on recidivism by looking at the discontinuities that occur in each security level inmates are assigned to. The results show that harsher prison conditions increase recidivism. They explain that that their results may have been skewed by the small sample size but is nevertheless significant information for researchers to refer to in future
