There are several important aspects of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures were present amongst the Greeks of the Archaic and Hellenic eras. Some of the pieces of Minoan and Mycenaean life that occurred in Greek culture were language, religion, economic ambition, social structure, architecture, and weaponry (Matthews, Noble, & Platt, 2014). Mycenaean culture had a substantial bearing on the later Greeks, but there also existed Minoan influences, although Archaic Greeks did not view the history of the Minoans as part of their heritage. Archaic Greeks knew very little of the Minoans, and the little that they did know came through myths. Minoan influences likely seeped into later Greek culture because Mycenaean culture itself adopted some of the Minoan ways of life. While not much could be learned about Minoan language, the Mycenaeans likely expanded on Linear A in written communication termed Linear B. Linear B was deciphered by experts, and the language was understood to be Greek in its primitive form (Matthews et al., 2014). The religion of later Greeks may have been connected to the Minoan religion through the Greek domination of Crete. Minoans believed Crete to be the birthplace of Zeus, but contrary to Minoan belief, Archaic Greeks believed Zeus to be immortal, suffering no death.
