During the civil rights era, many groups and organizations were formed. Some of these groups were violent while others were not. A Lot of the groups fought for rights and some fought for themselves. The Ku Klux Klan was and is a hate group towards African Americans. The Ku Klux Klan that started on December 24, 1865 and was mainly around southern states. The klan is one of the oldest terrorist groups in the United States. The Ku Klux Klan is a group of white supremacists. The Kan actually started off as a idiotic social club but in less than a year it grew into a terrorist group. The Ku Klux Klan carried out violence towards african Americans. The most popular act was lighting big crosses on fire in their yards. Although the klan did pursue other acts of violence. The first rise of the klan spread to almost every southern state by 1870. The Ku Klux Klan is also known as the KKK. The KKK’s uniforms started off as just random rodes and clothes. Soon the KKK changed their uniforms to white robes with a white pointed mask. The new uniforms also had the KKK symbol on the lower right shoulder. As the KKK’s numbers grew they started to carry out more and more crime. Currently there are about 150 active KKK groups in America. Although the KKK today isn't as nearly as powerful as what it used to be in the 1920’s. Just in 2016 the KKK made it into National Headlines twice. David Duke a Louisiana State Representative is also a KKK leader. Duke said in a press conference that it should be a crime to not vote for Trump. This was soon brought to the attention to Donald Trump where he proceeded to say that he did not know who David duke was nor did he know about his ties to the KKK.
